Hello dear GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS & ADULTS reader!

Have you been able to enjoy some of Houston's amazing outdoor spaces? We were rated the #1 Greenest Texas City by Just Energy in 2019 which means we have plenty of greenery to make you grow. I am grateful for that -- "Commune with nature" is the fourth Way of my 12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily that's the core of my Ignite Your Life! art project. I love the earth so much!

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department was created by city ordinance on March 15, 1916 with two facilities, Sam Houston Park at The Heritage Society and Hermann Park. HPARD now oversees 382 developed municipal parks and more than 165 green spaces, which together encompass approximately 39,500 acres. Wowsa.

The Houston Parks Board was created in 1976 to improve, protect, and advocate for parks in the region. It began as a way to allow private money to improve parks in collaboration with HPARD. It's a nonprofit finding green for green.

If you're interested in natural beauty outside of Houston, check out these sites: Texas State Parks, Texas National Parks, and National Forests in Texas. The annual National Park Week is a time to celebrate our national treasures.

Below are some of my favorite greater Houston area nature spots. Every year in honor of Earth Day on April 22, I update this list. Get out there and enjoy!
