Our Sacred Grounds Newsletter

Issue #2 June 2026

Glory be to God ...

for clear blue skies and sunny days; for fresh green grass and leafy trees; for vivid purple flowers and well-tended gardens; for fluffy white clouds and gentle breezes. Glory be to God for the summer season!

Just a reminder: Seasonal decorations on your loved ones' gravesites are welcome. Please be sure the decorations you place are in keeping with our rules and regulations posted on signs and available here:

Your loved one's cremated remains are sacred. We can provide a permanent place of remembrance in our sacred grounds.

The Catholic Church cherishes the tradition of full-body burial, but we also welcome the inurnment of cremated remains in the sacred ground of our all our cemeteries. If you are currently holding the remains of a family member or friend at home, we invite you to reflect on their long-term legacy. Placing them in a Catholic Cemetery ensures a permanent, sacred resting place, where friends, family, and future descendants gather to remember. Don’t leave their final resting place to chance. Ensure they are honored with the dignity and remembrance they deserve.

DESIGN A LASTING LEGACY

There is a profound comfort in knowing that, even when we are gone, our loved ones will have a sacred place to find us. A custom monument or grave marker is more than just a tribute in stone; it’s designing a legacy to hold the stories, the laughter, and the love you’ve shared. Our Memorial Design Specialists walk beside you to create a sanctuary where your family can one day gather and simply remember. By pre-planning this memorial now, you are giving your family the most selfless gift of all: the quiet, undisturbed space to grieve and the beauty of a permanent home for your memory.

Great Work is Happening in our Cemeteries!

We are putting your donations to good use on our grounds. So far this year we have removed 16 dangerous trees and did extensive repairs (including new 4 foot deep foundations) on 14 historic monuments dating back to the 19th century. The John C. Heenan Lot in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands was completely restored recently. Mr. Heenan was the first Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World in the 1860s. Sadly, he died in 1874 at 39 years old. Even the strongest people of that era succumbed to diseases like Tuberculosis that took the Champion's life. His gravesite is once again a fitting memorial to him and his family.

Call for Professional Art Instructors

The Living Room Art Gallery located in the Visitor Center at Historic St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands is hiring art instructors for classes held on select Friday and Saturday mornings. We offer an hourly stipend and instructors set their own schedules. No marketing or administrative work is required. Our Director of Education handles all registrations and promotional materials. Instructors just come and teach classes with up to 24 adult participants. All materials are provided. If you are interested in teaching painting classes, please contact Kelly@ADCemeteries.org or call 518-350-7679. (painting by Noreen Powell)

Your donations allow us to continue removing dangerous trees like this one that was located near the old entrance to St. John's Cemetery in Troy. It was completely hollow!
