July 2020
President's Message
“In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It Goes On” ~Robert Frost

Robert Frost, known for such matter-of-fact quips, seems to have had the practicality of most veterinary professionals that I know and love. Here we are, halfway through summer, and our profession has indeed ‘Gone On’, pulling up our proverbial bootstraps, putting our heads down and caring for our patients and our community, during this world-wide health crisis.

I am simply in awe of every aspect of the veterinary industry. We have all adapted, improved, altered the way we practice - sometimes eliminating, but continually striving to provide the best to our patients, our students, our co-workers and our colleagues. Veterinary education has evolved in ways that most never dreamt possible! Rewind to July 2019 – did you ever envision that live pain-management Zoom® meetings could bring our IVAPM colleagues together from across the world? Well, it is happening, and it is a silver lining.

The IVAPM ‘goes on’ – and we are racing towards one of the busiest and most productive years in our almost-20-year history. We have our 2nd virtual symposium launch in September, more resources available on our website, and a vibrant, engaged community of thousands on our social media forums. Everyone is passionate about our mission, and we are passionate, too.

We have no plans to slow down as we approach 2021 – and you can read all about our exciting upcoming events below. From our founding members through two decades of dedicated leaders, the IVAPM has grown and flourished. There is no better time to get involved. There is no better passion than to advocate for animal pain management.

Looking forward to ‘going on’ with you.

Sincerely,

Jennifer F. Johnson, VMD, CVPP

Feline Grimace Scale
Pain is often difficult to recognize in cats due to their unique behavior.

The Feline Grimace Scale is a valid, fast, reliable and easy-to-use tool that can help pain assessment. Based on the scores of the Feline Grimace Scale, it is possible to know if the administration of analgesics (i.e. painkillers) is required helping veterinarians with clinical decisions in pain management.

Want to Help?
The IVAPM CVPP examination committee is always looking for people to submit examination questions. If you are applying for credentialing, you will be required to submit questions with your application, so this is a great opportunity to get started. There is an excellent presentation on how to write exam questions, located on our website member portal

Reduced Registration Rate for IVECCS Virtual
The IVECCS 2020 has gone Virtual! The program has been condensed to provide 3 full days of topics relevant to the pain management practitioner, September 12-14, 2020.

On Saturday, September 12, we coordinated an IVAPM review for those interested in certifying as a veterinary pain practitioner, featuring preventative and chronic pain management, as well as a discussion on the effects of pain on quality of life and the burden on the caregiver. In addition there will be a special focus session on pharma and non-pharma treatment of pain in felines, and pharmaceuticals, phytochemicals, and pain in pets. On the following days, there will be topics presented in the general session related to pain management as well as emergency and critical care.

Since the virtual program can be accessed on-demand after the symposium to any registrant, there is a potential for earning >40 hours CE credit.

In consideration of the strong relationship IVAPM has with IVECCS and the hardships placed on our veterinary community because of the recent pandemic, the VECCS Board of Directors has not only reduced registration rates, they have provided IVAPM members with a special 60% discount rate below the non-VECCS member rate by using promo code: IVAPMVIRTUAL20 but you must first properly register as an IVAPM member.

There is an additional $160 registration fee for the IVECCS Veterinary MDR and $120 for the Technician MDR.
Visit IVECCS.org for information on their program!
