A Taste of KowTeff!

Check out KowTeff African Dance Company video highlights as we close-out #KowTeffCares Performance Week! Stay tuned for next week's offering of FREE live virtual dance classes and drumming.
We end #KowTeffCares Performance week with a throwback video from KowTeff African Dance Company! One of KowTeff’s signature dances, Balanta, is performed here at the Wofabe African Dance and Drum Festival in New Jersey. Balanta is a very light-hearted and exciting courtship dance. The Balanta people live in Guinea Bissau and in the Casamance region of Senegal.

KowTeff’s Artistic Director and Co-founder, Sewaa Codrington, researches the dances and folklore in Africa to preserve the traditional context of the rhythms, movements, and costuming concept for the dances. These Balanta costumes were designed by Sewaa and made in Senegal for the KowTeff company. Enjoy a taste of KowTeff!

KowTeff was featured in Brooklyn Independent Television's "Caught in the Act: Art in Brooklyn". Check out this exciting story that gives a deeper look into the family-run cultural arts institution at the time of filming, including the mission and inspiration, behind-the-scenes looks into performances and the operation of the organization, and candid interviews from KowTeff artists, Artistic Director and Co-Founder Sewaa Codrington, and her children Najja and Jamila Codrington.
