FEAST OF ST. MARIA GORETTI, VIRGIN AND MARTYR
The church celebrated the feast day of
St. Maria Goretti on July 6.
Her life is told in Formed.org's beautifully made film from Italy.
She is unique
- the youngest canonized saint in the Church.
Having died tragically on July 6, 1902, at the age of eleven.
The film explains St. Maria's life and the plight of the poor laborers and families,
struggling to survive a swampy area rampant with malaria and extreme poverty.
Her parents, Luigi and Assunta Goretti, keep their faith despite hardship,
and they instill in their children a deep love for God.
Their daughter Maria is especially devout.
But tragedy strikes the family. . . more than once:
sickness and death,
then their young neighbor Alessandro does the unthinkable.
... And St. Maria responds with an incredible act of mercy.
