Moving Forward

Residents can look forward to a full day of fun on Saturday, with plenty of time to enjoy two large community events.

The fun starts at Celebrating Animals in Veterans Memorial Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come enjoy adoptions, educational booths, alpacas, horse-drawn wagon rides, reptiles, a petting zoo, raffles, food trucks, and more!

Then rediscover the West End at West Fest from 3 to 9 p.m. This street fair will take place along Fry Boulevard between Garden Avenue and North Avenue. From 3 to 6 p.m., residents can peruse booths hosted by West End businesses and take part in family-friendly activities like street magic acts, face painting, and chalk art.

Stick around for a street dance with live music by No Alibis from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission to the event is free and food will be available for purchase.

Fry Boulevard will be closed between N. Garden Avenue and North Avenue from 9:30 a.m. to shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday.

City Council News

Council accepts grant for new path at Cyr Center Park

The Sierra Vista City Council accepted a $100,000 grant for a new multi-use path and related improvements at Cyr Center Park at its meeting on Thursday.

The grant is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and is provided by the Arizona State Parks Non-Motorized Grant Program. The City will contribute an in-kind cash match of $3,250.

The grant will fund the construction of an ADA compliant path, related drainage improvements, two ADA ramps, and signage along the pathway. The new path will connect the existing pathway around Cyr Center Park with another existing path just south of Kayetan Drive. It will also provide pedestrian access from the new public parking lot being constructed at the park.

In other business, the City Council approved the issuance of economic development revenue bonds by the Industrial Development Authority of the City of Sierra Vista. The proceeds of the bonds will be loaned to the Georgetown Community Development Authority, a Washington-based nonprofit organization, for the purpose of financing and refinancing the acquisition and improvement of community facilities.

While these facilities are in Seattle, Washington, the fee paid to the Sierra Vista IDA will be used by the IDA to spur economic development efforts here in Sierra Vista. The Council approved IDA bonds for the same purpose in October 2021 and these new bonds were issued based on an opportunity to expand the efforts of the Georgetown Community Development Authority.

This action has no impact on the City’s budget because the IDA is a separate entity, however the City Council’s approval is required to finalize the issuance of bonds by the IDA. The City has no fiscal liability associated with the issuance or repayment of the bonds.

Our latest feathered friend of the library is the Say’s Phoebe, which is one of over 400 species in the family of tyrant flycatchers. Say’s Phoebes hunt by flitting off perches to snatch insects in midair or by hovering low over the ground and pouncing once food is spotted. City Announcements

The large dog park in Tompkins Park will remain closed for maintenance for about three to four more weeks to allow reseeded turf adequate time to grow. The small dog park is divided into two areas during the closure, with the southern portion dedicated for large dogs and the northern half reserved for small dogs.

The small dog park is also closed once each week for about 30 to 45 minutes for mowing, with the precise time depending on growth and staffing. We appreciate everyone's patience and look forward to reopening the large dog park in late May!
