Bark: A Field Guide to Trees of the Northeast, Author Michael Wojtech, Conducts Master Gardener Class at Wakefield

Michael used the Wakefield Arboretum as his laboratory for testing his field guide to identify native trees by the type of bark they have. Twenty-five Master Gardeners explored the collection with Michael, learning and identifying traits of the wide variety of species that grow here at the arboretum.

Welcome Ellen!

The Mary May Binney Wakefield Arboretum welcomes our new horticulturalist Ellen Scheid. Ellen holds a degree in Natural Resource Management from Indiana University and comes to Wakefield after completing an internship at Norcross Wildlife Foundation and working at the New England Botanic Garden as an outdoor gardener. She has a lifelong passion for the outdoors and strives to continue to learn more about the natural world. The management, preservation, and beautification of the spaces that we surround ourselves with, interest and motivate her deeply.

Mushroom Workshop A Huge Success!

This year our mushroom workshop was held in the carriage barn due to the inclement weather. Tight quarters made for a festive mood with folks helping each other to drill and inoculate their mushroom logs. We are looking forward to seeing the pictures of the fruiting logs in the fall.

Staff Note

Spring has arrived at the arboretum with blankets of snowdrops, and crocus, flowering Cornus mas, andromeda, and silver maples bringing joy to all who witness. It is a very busy time for us in the garden, preparing to plant more than 250 bareroot plants in the nursery and 200 plants along the completed entryway. We are expanding our collections with species that will be able to handle the variety of conditions impacting the gardens today. We hope you come and visit to watch the garden wake up and reveal all of its beauty.
