Boston Public School students send thank you notes to Wakefield staff

This year the thank you notes from visiting students brought much joy to our staff. The kids have great imaginations and love coming to the arboretum and are very good at expressing their adventures through drawings.

Continuing Education for Wakefield Staff Members

Staff members enjoy the opportunity to attend conferences and workshops at other gardens and arboreta. Horticulturalist, Ellen Scheid and Facilities Manager, Matthew Noiseux attended the new England Apple Tree Symposium at New England Botanical Garden this fall. This conference highlighted apple tree are an appropritate species for New England orchards. This symposium will help staff members maintain the new heritage orchard here at the arboretum.

The Arboretum has a Da Vinci Bridge

Staff member Matthew Noiseux built the bridge from wood harvested on the property. Originally designed by Leonardo Da Vinci, this bridge is a self-supporting bridge design that relies solely on interlocking geometric structure without fasteners. The bridge connects the agricultural zone to the wetland where staff members will be planting native plants in the spring.

Example of interlocking pieces of a Da Vinci bridge.

Staff Note

As the holiday season approaches we am reminded how fortunate we are to work in this beautiful arboretum full of daily wonder and joy. The leaves have fallen and the early morning light on frosted fields and flowers is magical. It is a great opportunity to see the'"bones" of the garden and begin to plan for spring plantings. We would like to wish everyone a happy and peaceful holiday season and thank you for all of your support.
