Hospital Week made us all realize how much we have missed being able to visit all locations and see everyone. As COVID-19 circumstances allow, we are hoping that members of the executive and senior leadership teams can visit all locations quarterly. Our aim is to say hello, bring some treats, and be available for discussion of what’s going on at your location. We want to hear about your successes and your concerns, and most of all, we want to see you and have time to talk!
We'll start the week after Memorial Day. The schedule is below; times are approximate. Hope to see you soon!
-
Holton: Tuesday, May 31, 12 noon to 1 p.m.
-
Westmoreland: Wednesday, June 1, late morning
-
Frankfort: Wednesday, June 1, lunchtime
-
Centralia: Wednesday, June 1, early afternoon
-
Onaga: Thursday, June 2, afternoon
-

Behind the headlines: What does new SIDS research mean?
|
|
A recent study about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, has made news headlines. The study stated that the biochemical marker for the cause for SIDS was discovered. This is exciting news, but more research is needed before the discovery can be put into clinical practice.
Dr. Nancy Zidek took time to explain a little about the study and the guidance parents should follow to reduce the risk of SIDS as research continues.
|
|
Dr. Nancy Zidek and Dr. David Allen and their families recently celebrated the graduation of two special new MDs from the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
Zev Allen graduated with the additional degree of Masters of Public Health. Zev will be doing a family medicine residency at Indiana University Health, Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana. Zev received his undergraduate degree at Kansas State University.
Bethany Peach will do her family medicine residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine at the Via Christi campus in Wichita. Bethany also received her undergraduate degree from Kansas State University.
Congratulations to Zev and Bethany
AND to their proud parents!

Congratulations to CHCS scholarship awardees
|
|
CHCS awards two $500 scholarships to graduation high school seniors in our area who are planning to enter a healthcare profession. Funds for the scholarships are donated through the Caring Community Foundation. Our goal is to raise enough funding to be able to offer a scholarship in each of our communities. Learn more about how to donate through Greater Giving.
This year's scholarship recipients were Madie Wilt from Holton High School and Katherine "Kaylee" Lukert from St. Marys High School.
|
|
Madie Wilt has been a member of eight clubs at Holton High School. She has held many leadership positions, including chairing planning committees and serving as the KAY chapter president. She works as a Certified Nursing Aide at The Pines of Holton and as a barista at the Holton Hotspot. This fall, she plans to attend Wichita State University and major in health science on a pre-PA track and minor in health management to become a dermatology physician assistant.
|
|
Katherine “Kaylee” Lukert is a Kansas Board of Regents State Scholar and graduated from St. Marys High School. She has always been active in agriculture and has won many local and state awards through FFA, 4-H, and the Wabaunsee County Fair. She has also won state awards in FCCLA and FBLA. This fall, she will be attending the University of Kansas, majoring in biochemistry. She has been accepted into the honors program and will be living in a scholarship hall. Kaylee will work during college as a phlebotomist in a hospital laboratory and as an EMT. She is considering double or even triple majoring in biology or microbiology. After completing her undergraduate studies, Kaylee plans to attend medical school. Her end goal is to become a cardiothoracic surgeon.

Trash etiquette
Did you realize that there are 358 trash cans in Onaga Community Hospital?
Environmental Services' goal is to empty every one of these 358 receptacles daily. Please help EVS staff take care of our facility by following some basic trash etiquette guidelines both here in Onaga and at outlying locations.
- If you would like to throw away an unfinished drink, please dump the liquid before discarding the cup.
- Make sure trash gets IN the trash can instead of just NEAR the trash can.
- If your trash is overflowing, please tie the trash bag and start a new bag (most trash cans have extra bags in the bottom).
-
If your trash is picked up before lunchtime and your trash can is overflowing with containers after lunch, or if your trash can contains food waste that will not smell nice by the next day, please tie up your trash bag and start a new one. If you are in Onaga, send EVS Manager Butch Meyer an email so he knows to come and pick up your trash bag.
Thanks for your help!

For the birds
Redbud residents recently made bird feeders out of popsicle sticks. According to Michelle Lippert, activities director, residents "surprised themselves with how much fun they had" with this craft project!
|
|
Sign of the times?
The Redbud sign was destroyed in last December's derecho. A nice new limestone sign is on order, and Maintenance has poured the footing. John Rempe was eager for the sign space to be filled, so he decided to beautify it with a temporary sign until the new one arrived. Thanks, John!
