10% Campaign
|
The 10% Campaign is a project of the Center For Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS). The campaign encourages you to spend 10% of your existing food dollars to support North Carolina food producers, businesses and communities. Why 10%? In North Carolina, we spend $35 billion on food every year. If we spend 10% of our food dollars on local product, we can infuse over $3.5 billion into the local economy. As avid supporters of the Durham Farmers' Market, you already know the many advantages to shopping locally. So, why join the campaign? It will re-affirm your commitment to shopping locally and it sends a strong message to policy makers about the importance of local foods! For more information visit: www.nc10percent.com |

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include additions of fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free. Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Fridays from 3-7 pm, Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5 pm.
This week we will be sampling: our newest release of
Ginger Mead, using local ginger root - dried, juiced and grated - to infuse the soothing and warming qualities of ginger into an aged semi-sweet dark wildflower honey traditional mead.
We will also be sampling our latest release of our
Hibiscus Lemonthyme Mead, floral, earthy and herbal dry-style mead with NC wildflower honey, dried hibiscus petals and fresh lemonthyme.
And we will also be sampling
Spiced Apple Cyser Mead, like apple pie in a glass. Made from NC apple cider fermented with NC wildflower honey, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg.
We will also have bottles available of our Strawbanero Mead, a lightly sweet mead with fresh strawberries and a spicy kick; and our Honey Chai Mead, loaded with an infusion of exotic spices, mingled with honey.

Chapel Hill Creamery
We have our Indian Paneer this Saturday. Use it gently fried to add to your favorite vegetables or add it to Palak Paneer (spiced Mixed Greens) or Mater Paneer (Peas and cheese). You can also find Paneer on the menu at Lantern Restaurant. We also have our semi-soft Danziger cheese to taste and buy. Both Danziger and our 8- month aged Calvander were finalists for a Good Food Award, and Danziger was a winner for 2019. There were only 18 cheese winners out of 220 winners for all 16 categories. This organization in San Francisco evaluates taste but also how the ingredients are bought or produced. Of course our milk comes from our own herd of Jersey cows which is certified Animal Welfare Approved. Our sustainability also includes our whey fed pork and our membership of the Orange County Living Wage. Danziger is a washed rind cheese which means the flavor is beefy with a little funk. The texture is smooth and usually eaten at room temperature with crackers or a crusty bread. We have a limited amount right now and will increase production soon.
Other cheeses are fresh Dairyland Farmers, Carolina Moon, Hickory Grove, Hot Farmers, and Calvander. Each cheese has a distinct flavor and texture and we have samples if you'd like to taste, as well as serving suggestions and recipes. Add Calvander to hearty salads or risotto, melt Hickory Grove, serve Carolina Moon, our Camembert style, with ripe pears, and add the tangy Farmers to sandwiches, eggs, or tacos.
Our ground beef is on special price this weekend to entice people to learn why Jersey beef is so good. It is $5.00 per pound instead or $6.00 regular price. The cows' diet is primarily forage and Jersey beef gets high scores for tenderness and flavor. Make a delicious cheeseburger with the Hickory Grove or use it for meat loaf or spaghetti. We're bringing Molasses cured Bacon, bacon bits, ground pork, lots of sausage including Mild or Hot Breakfast, Sage and Maple Breakfast, Mild or Hot Italian, Bratwurst, Polish, and Chorizo. Pick up your favorite to have on hand to use in soup, with cooked greens, or served over polenta. The sausages are made with the hams for a meaty flavor, with spices we've chosen, and have no nitrates. All our meat is hormone and antibiotic free. See you on Saturday!
