This week:

The Cactus and Snowflake at Work:

How the Logical and Sensitive Can Thrive Side by Side

by Devora Zack

Carl Jung's personality typology introduced the distinction that Feelers (who lead with their hearts) put more weight on personal concerns and the people involved, and Thinkers (who lead with their heads) are guided by objective principles and impartial facts. This book calls them Cacti and Snowflakes—each singularly transcendent. But can people with such fundamentally different ways of making sense of and engaging with the world work together?

"Yes!" says Devora Zack. The key is not to try to change each other. Zack says we can directly control only three things: what we say, what we think, and what we do. The best use of our energy is to focus on our own reactions and perceptions rather than try to "fix" other people.

This book includes an assessment so readers can learn where they are on the Thinker/Feeler spectrum—and because it's a spectrum, readers might well be a snowcactus or a cactusflake. Then Zack helps them figure out where other people might be, guiding them through a myriad of modes of communication and motivation based on personality type.

Celebrations is Closing

From Angie Kirkpatrick, owner of Celebrations.

"I'd like to send out a Thank-You to the entire Ohio Valley for all the support you’ve given me since I became the owner. I’ve enjoyed being part of all your special occasions.

"I’m sad to say that with everything that is happening, I’m shutting down the store. After 104 years of being in this Valley, it’s time. Health reasons, prices are increasing on me, and I can’t make my pricing what they want me to."

"I hope to see you all before the door closes. I love this Valley and I wish you all the very best. Thank you again!"

The Chamber thanks Angie for being part of our community. We wish her all the best! Please stop by her store, in the Fort Steuben Mall, to say farewell and take advantage of the 50% off sale for everything in the store (except balloons).

April Fools' tradition popularized

From History: On April 1, 1700, English pranksters begin popularizing the annual tradition of April Fools’ Day by playing practical jokes on each other.

Although the day, also called All Fools’ Day, has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures, its exact origins remain a mystery.

Some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes.

April Fools’ Day spread throughout Britain during the 18th century. In Scotland, the tradition became a two-day event, starting with “hunting the gowk,” in which people were sent on phony errands (gowk is a word for cuckoo bird, a symbol for fool) and followed by Tailie Day, which involved pranks played on people’s derrieres, such as pinning fake tails or “kick me” signs on them.

Today is April Fools' Day. Here's one of history's most famous pranks.

Did You Know?

  • One year, satirist Jonathan Swift decided to play a very elaborate All Fools’ Day prank on John Partridge, a famous astrologer who sold bogus predictions to the public in almanacs.
  • After Partridge predicted in his 1708 almanac that a fever would sweep London in early April, Swift published an almanac under a fake name predicting that on March 29 at 11 p.m., Partridge would die “of a raging fever.”
  • The public was intrigued, but Partridge was irate, and he published a rebuttal to Swift’s almanac calling its author a fraud.
  • Then, on the night of March 29, Swift published an elegy (again, under a fake name) announcing that Partridge—a “cobbler, Starmonger and Quack”—had died, and admitted on his deathbed that he was a fraud.
  • News of Partridge’s death spread over the next couple of days, so that when Partridge walked down the street on April 1, people stared at him in surprise and confusion.
  • Partridge angrily published a pamphlet saying he was alive, and Swift again publicly asserted that Partridge was dead, and claimed Partridge’s pamphlet was written by someone else.
  • The whole escapade helped to discredit Partridge, who eventually stopped publishing almanacs.

Software Developers among

Top Jobs in Ohio

From The Business Journal: In-Demand Jobs Week is May 2 to 6, and the state is promoting the top career paths that pay more than $50,000 annually.

Software developers are among the highest paying jobs being promoted, with a median salary of $91,000.

Other jobs being promoted range from computer programmers, which pay a median salary of $84,000, to fire fighters, which pay $51,000.

“In-Demand Jobs Week is a great chance for businesses to open their doors and showcase the many top jobs, industries and skills across Ohio,” said Gov. Mike DeWine. “The best way to find out if a job is for you is to try it out, and students will have that opportunity to do just that.”

Report Finds Small Businesses Offering More Flexibility, Higher Wages, New Benefits to Find and Keep Workers

As the worker shortage crisis continues to cause major headaches for small businesses, a new U.S. Chamber and MetLife poll finds that hiring challenges are causing the majority of small business owners to change the way they recruit and retain employees.

According to new data from the Q1 2022 MetLife and U.S. Chamber of Commerce Small Business Index (SBI), over half of small businesses (56%) say they are concerned about recruiting enough new employees to fill open positions, and 57% are concerned about employee retention.

Larger small businesses (20-499 employees), in particular, find employee retention a challenge: they rank employee retention (21%) alongside inflation (24%), supply chain disruptions (25%), and COVID-19 (26%) as their highest concerns.
