Statue of Liberty Arrives in New York
From History: On June 17, 1885, the dismantled Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of America, arrives in New York Harbor after being shipped across the Atlantic Ocean in 350 individual pieces packed in more than 200 cases. The copper and iron statue, which was reassembled and dedicated the following year in a ceremony presided over by U.S. President Grover Cleveland, became known around the world as an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy.
Intended to commemorate the American Revolution and a century of friendship between the U.S. and France, the statue was designed by French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi (who modeled it after his own mother), with assistance from engineer Gustave Eiffel, who later developed the iconic tower in Paris bearing his name. The statue was initially scheduled to be finished by 1876, the 100th anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence; however, fundraising efforts, which included auctions, a lottery and boxing matches, took longer than anticipated, both in Europe and the U.S., where the statue’s pedestal was to be financed and constructed. The statue alone cost the French an estimated $250,000 (more than $5.5 million in today’s money).

Sunday is Juneteenth.
Did You Know?
- Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
- Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
- Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1st, 1863.
- The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order.
- However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

From Columbus Underground: A new report was released this month ranking the business climate for LGTBQ+ people in all 50 states.
Ohio scored a 53.43 out of 100, a failing score that actually represents an increase over 2021.
Out Leadership’s State LGBTQ+ Business Climate Index measures “the impact government policies and prevalent attitudes have on LGBTQ+ people residing in each state, quantifying the economic imperatives for inclusion and the costs of discrimination.”
The survey is specifically geared towards helping business leaders make equitable decisions about where to set up operations.

Proposal at WTO to Waive Intellectual Property Would Set Harmful Precedent
U.S. Chamber of Commerce Global Innovation Policy Center Senior Vice President Patrick Kilbride issued the following statement today regarding developments on intellectual property (IP) rights at the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference (“MC12”):
“Misguided proposals to undermine intellectual property rights would set a harmful precedent without solving any of the actual problems preventing more widespread vaccination.
“Waiving intellectual property rights would only hobble the innovation that is critical to improving lives and raising living standards globally. If enacted, this move would set an unfortunate precedent and may limit innovative companies' ability to devote unprecedented resources to quickly discover and deliver solutions for the next global crisis, be it pandemic, food security, or climate-related.
