Today in History
- January 14, 1980 -
Gold prices soar
From History: After being released from government control, gold reaches a new record price on January 14, 1980, exceeding $800 an ounce.
Gold is scattered sparsely throughout the earth’s crust and since ancient times has been treasured for both its scarcity and metallurgic properties. Before the 19th century, most nations maintained a bimetallic monetary system, which often included gold but consisted mainly of silver.
Beginning in Great Britain in 1821, units of currency were redeemable for a fixed quantity of gold, a change that Britain hoped would stabilize its rapidly growing economy.

Did You Know?
Martin Luther King Jr.’s "I Have a Dream" speech was not his first at the Lincoln Memorial.
Six years before his iconic oration at the March on Washington, King was among the civil rights leaders who spoke in the shadow of the Great Emancipator during the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom on May 17, 1957.
Before a crowd estimated at between 15,000 and 30,000, King delivered his first national address on the topic of voting rights.
His speech, in which he urged America to “give us the ballot,” drew strong reviews and positioned him at the forefront of the civil rights leadership.

Ohio Targets Fraud as
1099-G Tax Form Distribution Begins
From Business Journal Daily: As the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services begins issuing 1099-G tax forms to individuals who received unemployment benefits the previous year, Director Matt Damschroder says the department is taking additional steps to ensure 1099s go only to legitimate claimants amid widespread identity theft experienced by unemployment programs across the country, according to a release.
“Identity theft has been a widespread national challenge for state unemployment programs since the start of the pandemic,” Damschroder said in the release. “For many individuals in 2020, a 1099 was their first indication that their personal information was used to file a fraudulent unemployment claim. To help ensure we do not generate a 1099 for victims of identity theft, we contacted everyone slated to receive a 1099 and asked them to report potential identity theft through our recently enhanced fraud-reporting portal.”

U.S. Chamber CEO Statement on
Historic Inflation Report
The following statement can be attributed to U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Suzanne Clark:
“Today’s numbers are a reminder that we need policymakers focused on combatting inflation. That means avoiding policies, like the current so-called Build Back Better Bill that will fuel greater near-term price increases.
"Instead policymakers should pursue policies that will reduce inflationary pressures, including addressing the worker shortage crisis, expanding trade, and reducing tariffs.
“Yesterday, the U.S. Chamber, as part of our State of American Business, called for doubling the level of legal work-based immigration, removing barriers for parents, the formerly incarcerated, and others to enter the workforce, and launching a robust trade agenda.”
