The #1 Thing Employees Want at Work

From Big Think: Here’s how to design a work environment that gives control to employees and stimulates open conversation. Americans are reevaluating their relationship with work. However, collective illusions about the workplace are holding back reform. Many workers believe that their colleagues want to work for an employer that gives them nice fringe benefits — like free food, swag, and fancy job titles. In reality, people want more fulfillment and purpose in their jobs, as well as a healthy work-life balance in which they are trusted to make good decisions. Juneteenth Community

Celebration

Four Day Event

June 17-20, 2022

On June 19, 1865, the Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and all enslaved people were now free.

The day became known as Juneteenth, or Freedom Day,

the oldest African-American holiday. In June 2021, this day, Juneteenth or Freedom Day, was designated a Federal Holiday - Juneteenth National Independence Day - a time to honor African-American heritage, but also an occasion to revel and reflect on the principles upon which this great nation was founded.

Second Baptist Church, Steubenville City Schools, Trinity Health Systemand the Old Fort Steuben have joined forces to hold a Four Day Celebration to commemorate Juneteenth in the City of Steubenville. There will be entertainment, food vendors, games and activities for children, health screenings, special performances by students of SCS and Sycamore Center, featured performances by Angela Primm (ordained minister and renowned gospel artist), commercial venders, special guest speakers' music, and much more. THERE WILL BE FUN FOR ALL!

Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis receive patent for blue jeans

From History: On May 20, 1873, San Francisco businessman Levi Strauss and Reno, Nevada, tailor Jacob Davis are given a patent to create work pants reinforced with metal rivets, marking the birth of one of the world’s most famous garments: blue jeans.

In San Francisco, Strauss established a wholesale dry goods business under his own name and worked as the West Coast representative of his family’s firm.

His new business imported clothing, fabric and other dry goods to sell in the small stores opening all over California and other Western states to supply the rapidly expanding communities of gold miners and other settlers.

By 1866, Strauss had moved his company to expanded headquarters and was a well-known businessman and supporter of the Jewish community in San Francisco.

Today is National Pizza Party Day!

Did you know?

  • The word pizza dates back over a thousand years; it was first mentioned in a Latin text written in southern Italy in 997 CE.
  • In 1835, Alexandre Dumas, author of The Three Musketeers, traveled to Naples, where he observed that the Neapolitan poor ate nothing but watermelon during the summer and pizza during the winter.
  • The first pizza place in America was Lombardi’s in New York City. Originally opened as a grocery store, Lombardi’s started selling pizza in 1905.
  • The founder of Domino's is one of only three people with a degree in "Pizza-ology."
  • The first frozen pizza hit the market in 1962. It mostly tasted like cardboard until the genius food inventor Rose Totino got her hands on it.

Ohio expects to issue 3,000 sports betting licenses, will launch 'close to' Jan. 1 deadline

From WCPO Cincinnati: The Ohio Casino Control Commission has ended speculation about an early start to sports betting in Ohio by announcing the launch will happen “close to January 1, 2023,” the deadline imposed by lawmakers in December.

Two state senators told media outlets this week that Ohio might launch in October to take advantage of betting demand caused by NFL football and baseball’s World Series. But Executive Director Matt Schuler told the commission Wednesday morning too much work needs to be done for the launch date to move up.

An Effective Climate and Energy Security “Grand Bargain” Is Within Reach

The Illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine—and its impact on the cost and supply of energy—highlight the importance of reliable and affordable energy even as the world pursues the transition to cleaner energy.

This shifts the policy debate related to climate change, energy, national security, and even economics, and provides an opportunity to advance progress on all these fronts.

Pursuing climate progress and energy security are not mutually exclusive.
