Olten Downs Takes the Reins for
Alexander High School’s Football Program
The Douglas County School System welcomes Olten Downs as head football coach for Alexander High School. Coach Downs replaces Matt Combs, who stepped down in January after 10 successful years as head coach.

Coach Downs served as head coach the last two seasons at Westover High School in Albany, GA, where he led the team to the AAA state playoffs in 2020. Prior to Westover, Downs served as safeties coach at Georgia Southern University and assistant director of player development at the University of Georgia. Other high school coaching experience includes Creekside High School, Riverdale High School and Carver High School.

“I am excited to take over a solid football program at Alexander. My goal is to take it to a new level,” said Coach Downs. “I want to raise young men to be leaders and good fathers,” he continued. “I want them to learn to work hard and love the process.”

Coach Downs said he spent a lot of time in Douglasville and became familiar with Alexander from his time coaching at Creekside High School. “I’m excited about this opportunity. Alexander is a great school and Douglas County is a respected school district. I look forward to building on Alexander’s winning tradition.”

Coach Downs and his wife, Sharee, have two children. Coach Downs plans to start work at Alexander on March 1.
Celebrating Black History Month

February marks Black History Month, and schools across the district are celebrating in fun and creative ways while learning the many contributions of African Americans throughout history.
Students at Chapel Hill Elementary were able to have a visually hands-on experience honoring a variety of inventors for Black History Month. The exhibit exposes the visitor to various inventions, cultivates conversation about how these inventions impact society today, and it generates a desire for students to aspire to become inventors themselves and promote interest and investment in African American inventions.

Each of the 26 inventors were featured with a visual of their item and information about them and their invention. Students were engaged in their learning and were able to make real-world connections by recognizing items in their household or world. In addition to the exhibit, many students completed individual research posters and were excited when the person they researched was presented.

Jace Rose, a first grader at CHES, said the Super Soaker invention was his favorite. The Super Soaker was invented in 1989 by engineer Lonnie Johnson and designed by William Raucci. "I think it would be so cool to be an inventor and invent something fun for kids to play with," said Jace.

The conclusion of the exhibit contains motivation for students to become innovators and inventors themselves in hopes of someday joining the display of inventions. Some of the other inventors featured Madam CJ Walker, inventor of hair care products, and Thomas Martin, inventor of the fire extinguisher.

Every class in the school was able to experience the exhibit. This exhibit has been displayed in schools, churches, libraries, museums, and other venues since February 2013.
CTAE and Dual Enrollment:
Two Paths to Preparing for College and Career
February is CTAE Month and a time to celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of our Career, Technical and Agriculture Education programs!

The CTAE programs in all five high schools and the College & Career Institute (CCI) offer a wonderful way for students to gain career skills and certifications while in high school.

In addition, students can participate in Dual Enrollment at Georgia colleges and universities while in high school and earn technical college credit or core college credits that will transfer to any college or university in the University System of Georgia.

Today we are featuring the opportunities at West Georgia Technical College (WGTC). Students who participate in Dual Enrollment at WGTC may attend the CCI and use transportation provided by the Douglas County School System.

Register to be a "Principal 4 A Day"
Ever wonder how principals keep their schools running, their staff happy, and their students engaged?

Even though the coronavirus pandemic is limiting visitors to schools, during the week of March 8, Partners in Education is offering community members an opportunity to spend some virtual one-on-one time with a Douglas County School System principal. Participants will learn about the creative programs and offerings available at “their” respective school while engaging in different aspects of “a day in the life” of a principal.

The virtual visit will link participants to at least four different areas or activities. One link may be a school assembly followed by a link to a classroom or lab, or you may be linked to a fine arts presentation followed by a team leaders’ planning meeting. Each session will last about 15 minutes. You'll get bragging rights for being a Principal 4 A Day, but your time requirement is only one hour.

The actual date and time during the week of March 8 will be coordinated between each school’s principal and the Principal 4 A Day. Follow the link to register and make sure to secure your spot by February 22.

Sweet Treats for
Teachers and Staff

Yesterday, teachers and staff at all schools received a customized gift of Valentine cookies as a thank you from the Board of Education and Superintendent North.

"We are grateful for the hard work of the teachers and staff at our schools," said Superintendent North. "Their perseverance while dealing with all the challenges of COVID has made us successful during this challenging year. All employees received a monetary thank you last week, and the gift of cookies is just another way of saying thank you to the heart and soul of the school system."

Pictured with her "sweet" gift is Marsha Cozart, 6th grade ELA teacher at Yeager Middle School.
