AUGUST 2022

News for SSPC families & young adults

As a fantastic week of Vacation Bible School was held at Silver Spring Presbyterian Church the week of August 15, and backpacks were blessed on August 28, we recognize the end of Summer and the beginning of a new school year for our children and the change of seasons into Fall. As the colors change, we know that God is with us in all seasons. In this seventh issue of the Enlighten newsletter you’ll find meaningful opportunities for connection at the church this Fall and other useful information for young adults, families with children, and recent (or soon-to-be) empty nesters.

FAITH

Monday Bible Study

Monday Evening Bible Study resumes on September 12 at 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the Parlor (followed by fellowship until 9:00 p.m.). This study meets the second and fourth Mondays of the month and has endured at SSPC for 20 years!! The topic for the fall season is “The Great Courses Series” on the Old Testament by Professor Amy Jill Levine of the Vanderbilt University Divinity school. Each session will include a 30-minute video presentation preceded by a 15-minute introduction, followed by 15 minutes of discussion and observations. There is room for everyone so please join us on the 12th to determine if this study is right for you. Contact Tony Kren for more information, 717-763-8131.

Flower Ministry

Our flower ministry continues! You may sign up to donate money ear-marked for the chancel and/or window flowers for a future Sunday, in honor or in memory of a loved one. After the Sunday services, the flowers may be kept by the donor or donated to the Deacons’ flower ministry; in that case, they may be picked up by any church member who is interested to bring them home or to give to a friend or family member. Two different sign-up sheets for these purposes are located in the Gathering Place. Also, the Deacons are in need of additional vases; if you have extra vases, please leave them on the Parlor table.

Worship Music

The church’s choirs are always open to new members!

  • The Sanctuary Choir will be begin rehearsing on August 31 at 7:15 p.m. in the choir room for the fall season. Also, if you are interested in ringing bells, please contact Kyle Weary to let him know, so you can be placed in the Realm group to check for availability.
  • Our Intergenerational Choir will be resuming short practices at the beginning of Sunday School starting in September. This choir is for all ages. Please contact Tracy Wieseman if you have any questions or would like more information. We would love to have YOU sing with us!

Acolytes

Acolytes play a very important role for the church at the traditional service. When you become an acolyte, you join a long line of Christians who have helped their congregation and pastors worship God. When acolytes light our candles, they are the ones who give our church family the signal to begin the worship of God. Who can be an acolyte? Any youth in grades 3 - 12 can participate. Even adults can be acolytes! If you had been an acolyte in the early centuries, you would have been dressed in colorful costumes. Lighting the candles began in biblical times when the church was new. Because Christians met in dark and secret places, early Christians needed light to read the scriptures. The lighted candle not only let them see, but it also became a symbol of Jesus Christ. The people remembered what their Lord said: "I am the light of the world."  We invite you to contact the church office by emailing Priscilla and submit your name to become and acolyte!

Attention 7th and 8th graders!

Mrs. Diane Lupia and Pastor Lisa Chase will be teaching Confirmation Classes each Sunday during the Sunday School Hour starting in late September. All eligible students received a letter over the summer. Please look for an email soon regarding dates and important events.

FAMILY

The Christian Education Committee plans to begin Sunday School for children on Sunday September 18 – save the date! This will occur during the 10 a.m. hour. Those who have previously taught Sunday school or are interested in teaching should contact Scott Pepperman or Drew Crompton.

Recap of Vacation Bible School: August 15-19

VBS MH
VBS Chapel

Vacation Bible School was a joy-filled week with over 30 pre-K (4) year olds through 4th graders. The children enjoyed opening and closing worship songs in the Chapel, and rotated in four groups among different activities throughout the mornings, including crafts, outdoor games, yoga, touring the pollinator garden, and snacks! The week was capped off by a performance of the Creation Pageant on Friday for the children’s parents and grandparents, followed by a lunch and games, as well as a presentation of the Creation Pageant at worship on August 21.

A wonderful, meaningful time was had by all! Many thanks to the wonderful twenty adult and youth volunteers who gave so much of their time throughout the week. AND a big thank you to Pastor Lisa, who organized and directed the week, and Bryan Corbin and Emily Cocores who assisted.

Here are some photos, and more can be found on the SSPC's Facebook page. In the words of one 5 year-old-participant: “It was A LOT of fun!”

Glow in the dark golf

CORE Youth Ministry

The youth and I had a great time helping with VBS. We are planning a thank you to the youth that helped in the near future. The plan is to go to Trindle Bowl for glow in the dark mini golf and, of course, bowling! Stay tuned for more info about that.

CORE Banquet

I am planning a CORE Banquet and Calendar meeting for August 28th. By the time of reading, the CORE Youth Min. Family will have shared a meal together and have gotten excited about the coming year. We look forward to Zeteo, our winter retreat, many service opportunities, special outings, the live nativity, Youth Sunday, and even summer events for 2023. It is going to be an awesome year and I am excited to share these experiences with you, the Enlighten subscribers!

Bryan recently set up a GroupMe chat for the Youth Ministry. This is another way he will send out Youth Ministry Announcements. Click HERE to request to join the group.
