GET TO KNOW YOUR MEDICAL BILLS

Medical bills can be long, full of gibberish, and confusing! Check out some tips below for how to better understand your bills and possibly find savings.

-- Ask your medical provider for an itemized billing list. This will help you catch any surprise, duplicate, or unnecessary billings. If you find something wrong, reach out to your insurance company.

-- Ask for an explanation of benefits (EOB) from your insurance company. Make sure your pay share amount on the itemized bill matches what is on your EOB. If it doesn’t, reach out to your insurance company.

-- Check for over-charges by searching your billing code in the FH Consumer Cost Lookup to see how much a service typically costs. If there is a cost difference, check in with your insurance company or medical provider.

HONORING AN INSURANCE ALL-STAR

Ruth Case recently retired as a consumer affairs specialist from the Wyoming Department of Insurance (DOI), where she was a longtime public advocate and helpful assister to Enroll Wyoming.

As Ruth was readying for her retirement, she expressed how proud she was of the cohesiveness of the department and how workers supported each other when solving consumer issues and helping them with needs.

"I thought of the years we worked together. She has been an essential help to Enroll Wyoming and to me especially," Navigator Cynthia Nunley said. "Her calm demeanor kept us focused when we were helping a family in crisis. Her ability to work with me to find alternatives gave us both great joy."

Cynthia added Ruth was the glue that kept us all together and as successful as we were. "I know the DOI will continue on, but we will need to work harder in replacing her special abilities," she said.

BUSTING HEALTH INSURANCE MYTHS

Myth: If someone presents a logo or marketing material for their health insurance plan, it must be a real insurance company.

Fact: Scammers can show off some legitimate-looking material to get you to believe them. You should always check out a website before providing any personal information. If they don’t have a website, they likely aren’t real. You can also consult ratings from the Better Business Bureau.

Myth: It costs money to sign up for a new insurance plan.

Fact: Having a professional help you find health insurance is free, like with our friendly Enroll Wyoming staff. You should never have to pay money to navigate the insurance marketplace or to renew your Medicare card. When in doubt, call 211 and ask to speak to an Enroll Wyoming health insurance navigator.

Myth: If they offer me a discount, I’ll be saving money!

Fact: Scammers can charge an upfront fee that makes you “eligible for a discounted insurance rate.” If you have to pay a fee, it’s not a discount. You may also discover your “discounted coverage” doesn’t pay for everything you expect it to, leaving you with out-of-pocket costs.
