Enrollment Climbs to 530
The Hudson Catholic student body will rise to 530 in September with the addition of an incoming class of 133 to replace our graduating class of 116. This year marks our school’s arrival at a bit of an admissions milestone, as we have managed to ‘smooth’ the volatility in annual enrollment numbers and, for you biologists in the ranks, arrived at a point of homeostasis.

The 2022-2023 student body will comprise 133 Frosh, 139 Sophs, 128 Juniors, and 130 Seniors. No more big classes and small classes. They are now all big classes, for this era.

This makes for optimal efficiency from a faculty staffing perspective and positions the school for a strong operational and financial year ahead. As importantly, this is emblematic of a school that has sustained itself and built a strong foundation for future success, and is testament to an experienced and talented Administrative team, primarily the tireless efforts and leadership of Mr. Jaime DeLeon, our Director of Enrollment Management.
Let’s Help The 530 Get Off to a Great Start
With a Summer Appeal for
Fall Scholarship Aid
There is a flip side to our great enrollment milestone. With higher enrollment comes increased demand for financial assistance. In our case, a higher percentage of students are in need. For the first time, we have crossed the 80% threshold for families seeking tuition assistance.

In response to this trend, over the past two years we have been able to grow the size and impact of The Hudson Catholic Scholarship Program, which now comprises 29 awards, valuing $80,000, that are available to benefit 37 students. But among those, 14 awards that are open to contribution are in need of fresh funding in order to be awarded, whether in time for the September incoming student body, or as need may arise throughout the school year due to unforeseen circumstances.

Consequently, we’ll be appealing to targeted segments of the HC community for contributions to these 14 awards in early August, in order to fund them for issuance just in time for September and provide assurance to more families that they can maintain their youngsters in the premier school that is Hudson Catholic.

Please be on the lookout for an HCSP appeal letter in August and consider even a modest gift that, when combined with other similar gifts, can amount to meaningful financial aid for deserving students in need.

Summer a Happening Time at the Hawks Nest

There is never any real Summer Vacation in the world of Hudson Catholic High School as our halls are still crowded, albeit a bit less so than during the school year.  Our third incoming Freshman Summer Program cohort will finish up their week on campus this coming Friday.

At the same time, our Summer Theater program is getting ready to put on their performance of the Lion King Jr. this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Although the program is geared towards students ages 5 through grade 9, there’s a great Hudson Catholic flavor to the production.  Larry Basinski ’70 and Fred Barbi ’86 are helping run the technical aspects of the show, which is being directed by Sandra McGrath, wife of Patrick McGrath ’04, and features a grandson and granddaughter of Bruce Bock ’75 and the daughter of Fred Barbi and Assistant Principal Sarah Barbi.  The Hawk Fine & Performing Arts Program is growing!

Last week I was notified that Hudson Catholic has been invited to be a partner high school with Stevens Institute of Technology in the ACES (Assessing Careers in Engineering and Science) program.  Among the benefits Stevens will provide are:

·      Full scholarships for 3 top students to attend the Stevens Pre-College Summer Program
·      Special consideration for undergraduate scholarships
·      Customized admissions visit days for students and families
·      Special programming, including some overnight programs on campus
·      Admissions and financial aid workshops
·      A dedicated admissions counselor for the high school
·      Class field trips to Stevens research labs
·      Professional development for guidance counselors, science and math teachers
·      Inclusion in federal, state and corporate-sponsored grant programs and partnerships

Hudson Catholic now has a Dual Enrollment Program with St. Peter’s University in which students can earn 60 college credits and an Associates Degree;  an 18-credit Media Arts Certificate Program with New Jersey City University; and an ACES partnership with Stevens Institute of Technology.  A Hudson Catholic education truly opens doors to opportunity for our students!

Digital Yearbooks Are a Thing
The Alumni Association is now making it possible for you to leaf through your yearbooks without having to climb that rickety ladder into the attic, dust off all those boxes, and find the one that contains your treasured memories.

Yearbooks from '68, '69, '71, '72, '82, '92 are now digitized and available for viewing, while '70 and '73 are under construction. Go to:
Video is accompanied by music from our alma mater.

Plans are to digitize the 55-year collection at this site over several months. They will be added in sequence and announced here as they become available. We expect Memory Lane to become more heavily visited in the months ahead.
Celebrating Innovative Education
at Hudson Catholic

Dignitaries among The William E. Simon Foundation, St. Peter’s University, New Jersey City University and Hudson Catholic gathered on July 26th to commemorate and celebrate the Simon Foundation’s gift of a $75,000 Grant and Pledge to support our Dual Enrollment Program with SPU, now in its fifth year, and our Media Arts Program with NJCU, kicking off this year.

No Less Fame-ous
As a result of our article about Fame-ous Hawks and request for sharing HOF inductions that we missed, the response has been fast and definitive. We can now add six more Hawks in three more Halls of Fame:

Denise Danilewicz ’71 - American Payroll Association HoF

Coach Cory Robinson - NJ Hockey HoF (2022) / Xaverian High School (1990)

Five more Hawks, making it six in total, are in the St. Peter's University HoF: Jerry McCann '68, Mark Mai '69, Matt Hogan '86, and Ryan Knapp and Jon Wasielewski, both '99.

This brings the Hawk Hall of Fame count to 22 Hawks in 12 Halls. Keep 'em coming, whether we still don't have everyone tallied, or as new enshrinements may arise.
Alumni Spotlight

Man With a Plan. Ben Senger ’02 is a Civil Engineering Dept. Manager at AECOM, a preeminent American infrastructure consulting firm that partners with clients to solve some of the world’s most complex engineering challenges. Ben is also co-leading his Class of ‘02’s reunion efforts.

Principaled. Dario Soto ’00 is the latest Principal among the ranks of Hawk Alumni. He just completed his first year as the head of school for Crystal Lake School in Ellington, CT.

Semper Fi and Signum Fidei. Chris Balesteri '78, following Hudson, went on to the University of Scranton, from there, US Marine Corp Officer Candidate School and, later, Navy Flight Training. From 1984 thru 2020, he had a 36-year flying career with the Marines and Southwest Airlines. In retirement, Chris keeps his hand in things, both in the air, doing part time work in Unmanned Aerial Systems (drones), and on the ground, through involvement with local VFW and American Legion posts. Chris remains grateful for the gifts received from Hudson Catholic, of a great education and a solid foundation for future learning. For that, he enjoys supporting Hudson, and promises to do so for a long time.

When pressed for a memorable story or anecdote about his career in military and commercial aviation, Chris elected to tell “a great story about Brother Pat, and forgiveness.”

“I was a bad actor and student in junior year, and Brother Pat met with my parents and saw through my faults and put me back in class after a suspension. I used the story later on with a young Marine who showed up unfit for duty (on his way to combat) and, rather than ruin his career, I gave him the opportunity to recover, and he did in a big way. Brother Pat taught me that you had to look past some mistakes and see the future in some people.”
Among The Missing
We are looking to add email addresses for these essential Hawks to our BTL list so they, too, can get in on receiving ‘BTL’. Please let us know at advancement@hudsoncatholic.org, or direct them to hudsoncatholic.org/stay-connected to re-connect.

Blast From The Past
The question is, how far from the past? We know it predates 2001, but by how much? We also know it is post-1985, which is the year the World Financial Center (background) opened. The photo yields no indication of the date and the faces are too small to identify someone (unless you are in it) or a class year. We assume it is nearly the entire student body turned out for a Walkathon fundraiser. Who can identify the year and the event with certainty? Responses to advancement@hudsoncatholic.org.

Last issue’s Alumni Spotlight would have you believe that Liberty Special Metals existed in the metaverse. Truth is, it can be located in Livingston, NJ. Regrets for the omission and apologies to Nuno Cunha ’01.
“I started to notice things I was grateful for and the way other people would respond to difficulty with gratitude. I concluded that gratitude makes optimism sustainable. You don’t just receive optimism. You can’ t wait for things to be great and then be grateful for that. You’ve got to behave in a way that promotes that. And if you don’t think you have anything to be grateful for, keep looking.” -- Michael J. Fox
