As Iowa's only land-grant institution, Iowa State University was founded on a set of principles including that higher education be accessible to students regardless of wealth, race, or gender. Although Iowa State is one of the most affordable land-grant universities in the country, additional resources are needed to maintain affordability while ensuring academic excellence.
The Iowa Board of Regents is asking lawmakers to increase the state's investment in ISU by $7 million to help more Iowa students access a high quality Iowa State education. How would this benefit the state?
Iowa has a significant shortage of skilled workers and has set a goal for 70 percent of Iowa's workforce to have post-secondary education or training by 2025. Iowa State is graduating record numbers of students -- more than 8,300 degrees were awarded last year, and students average less than four and half years to graduate. Nearly two out of three resident graduates stay in Iowa to become part of the state's workforce.
An Iowa State education connects students with world-class faculty who impart practical knowledge and critical thinking skills. It provides high-impact opportunities like research projects, service learning, internships, and study abroad. This means ISU graduates are not only career-ready, they also have global, industry, and leadership experience. As a result, 95 percent of our graduates secure a job in their field or continue their education within six months.
At legislative coffees and other events this spring, let legislators know that increasing the investment in Iowa State University by $7 million will allow more students to access an exceptional ISU education. Iowa State graduates are leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers who will advance Iowa's economy.
