A Word from Jay...

On Sunday, September 15 ^th I had the pleasure of riding my bike the 55 miles from Sandwich to Provincetown as part of the Gasp – the annual charity bike ride that raises funds for the CDP and other worthy non-profits on the Cape. Fortunately, I was joined by CDP staff members David Abel, Britt Beedenbender and Alex Hopper along with Alan McClennen, Peter Kelly, Dan Schreiner, Thomas White, Tim Reed, John Guerra and Sarah McRoberts who collectively raised over $13,000 for the CDP.

It was a classic Cape Cod late summer day and the route served as a great reminder of the beauty of our region and our work to create a healthier and more sustainable Lower Cape community. We rode by Canal House – the CDP’s sober living residence in Orleans as well as the Village at Nauset Green in Eastham and the Clover Leaf site in Truro – two new affordable communities under development. As we rode by Mac’s Seafood and Truro Vineyards, I was reminded of the importance of our microloan program that provided some of the first financing for these now very successful businesses.

Most importantly, I was inspired by the power of community as over 200 riders raised funds for a wide variety of organizations working to make the Cape a better place to live.

CDP Housing helps family get on their feet

Christopher Reid first came to the Cape in 2002 when he left Jamaica for summer employment in Provincetown. For the next five years he split his time between the two places, making his living working in restaurants around the area. In 2010 he decided to settle here permanently, “There was more work and opportunity on the Cape than in Jamaica,” says Chris.

Chris had three children from a previous marriage still living in Jamaica. He hoped that at some point he could bring them to the States. During his visits to Jamaica, Chris met Tamara, a hairdresser and cosmetologist.

They married and she moved to the Cape in 2014, and found employment as a housekeeper. She and Chris struggled to find a place to live, but finally located a studio in Eastham . “We found it very difficult to find housing. It was either too much money or there was nothing available on the market,” says Chris. They decided that once they were established they would send for the children.

Eastham Superette: Never too old to improve

A number of Lower Cape businesses, such as Truro Vineyards and Sunbird Kitchen, have gotten their start working with the CDP. But many of the established businesses we work with approach us because they want to improve operations and grow their business. Such is the case with the landmark Eastham Superette, which is now in its 67th year.

The Eastham Superette has been serving Cape families and visitors since 1952, when the Brown family founded the store. The Superette is viewed by locals as a staple of the community, has an unassuming exterior and a portion of the façade is covered in flyers promoting local events. Inside is a busy deli, liquor store, and a market that offers a wide variety of items: from food to books, cards, pliers and nightlights.

In 2012, after 60 years of running the business, the Brown family decided that it was time to slow down and retire. They didn’t have to look very far to find the perfect couple to buy the business.

Supporter Spotlight: Andrea Reed

Andrea Reed thinks about housing and economic development a lot. Chair of the Orleans Planning Board, a former arts educator and mother of three, she brings those perspectives and her passion for the Lower Cape community to the CDP’s Advisory Council.

“Year-round housing and job creation is critical, and that is why the CDP is one of my favorite Cape organizations” says Andrea. “The CDP invests its money where it matters and changes lives through its work on the ground.”

A native of Washington D.C., Andrea grew up in a house immersed in public service – her father led R & D for the former US Atomic Energy Commission, her mom was a psychiatric social worker. The concept of public service was ingrained in her upbringing as a patriotic responsibility in a democracy. After earning her Master’s degree from UCLA, Andrea taught in the DC area before moving to Cleveland for her husband’s medical residency in 1987. Once there, Andrea worked for Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio developing translations and assessments of core curriculum for the Cleveland Public School system. Tim was recruited to join Orleans Medical in 1998.

Team CDP completes The Gasp

On the morning of September 15th, the 10 members of Team CDP braved the 55 mile journey from Sandwich to Provincetown in order raise money to support the CDP's continued work on the Lower Cape.

Through individual team fundraising efforts, sponsorships and support from the Barnstable Charitable Foundation, the CDP was able to raise over $30,000.

Truro Motor Inn Residents Face Eviction

Last week residents of the Truro Motor Inn received notice that the motel’s owner is set to appear before the Truro Board of Health. The hearing, scheduled for October 3rd, is to address several health and safety violations, including a failed septic system. The outcome of this hearing could mean condemnation of the Inn, which has been de facto affordable housing for many years.

It is estimated that up to 50 people, including around ten children, face eviction due to the closure of the property. The Homeless Prevention Council has been working with town officials to find a solution. Any leads about affordable housing opportunities for affected tenants can be sent to Hadley Luddy at the Homeless Prevention Council or Jay Coburn at the CDP.

Nauset Disposal hosts annual Trash Bash

On October 18th Nauset Disposal will be hosting their annual Trash Bash community fundraiser! This year the CDP was chosen as one of the six beneficiaries. Tickets include entry into the event. food and drink tickets, and door prize raffle ticket.

Tickets are $30 and can be purchased on Nauset Disposal's website .
