HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE LAST MONTH
|
EnviroCollective was invited to speak at SCIC’s Global Connections, a monthly social networking event where we had the opportunity to speak about our roots and achievements thus far, make goals for the future, and facilitate a friendly and open discussion about the environment! The event was attended by a wonderful group of both environmental activists and those looking to broaden their horizons. We would like to thank SCIC for this amazing opportunity!

INDUSTRY HIGHTLIGHT:
LOCAL INNOVATION, GLOBAL SOLUTIONS:
Electrical Solutions Inc
| |
| |
A Regina firm, Electrical Solutions Inc., a longstanding electrical contractor for Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), has revolutionized rail switch lighting. Traditionally, lighting installation involved costly trenching to utility power sources. Electrical Solutions sought a solar-powered alternative adhering to industry light and safety standards. After exhaustive market searches yielded no suitable options, Electrical Solutions undertook the challenge, leveraging their rail lighting expertise and patenting a locally grown solution. Overcoming practical and logistical hurdles, they designed a solar option with adjustable height, quick maintenance access, and minimal installation time. The innovative system addresses harsh Canadian winters, ensuring reliability, and aligns with CPKC's green initiatives, marking a significant leap in rail safety and sustainability.
Community Activist Profile
| |
Florence Stratton has been a social justice and environmental activist in Regina for nearly thirty years. She played a key role in creating the “Making Peace Vigil,” a weekly email with useful resources, events, petitions, and peace-related news. She fights for an end to poverty and houselessness, working with the Warm Welcome Coalition to create a warming station. She also demands that Regina “Get the Lead Out” of its drinking water and improve its public transit system. With Mother Earth Justice Advocates, she advocates for respect of all living beings. She’s stood with Friday for Future Regina and countless other protests. We thank Florence for her commitment to our community and the world at large.

RESOURCE FEATURE:
The Essentials of Economic Sustainability
| |
| |
According to John Ikerd, our economic model is unsustainable because it disregards ecological limits, social equity, and long-term well-being. Ikerd defines economic sustainability as the harmonious integration of economic activities with the regenerative capacity of the environment and the equitable distribution of benefits. "The Essentials of Economic Sustainability" explains how current economic practices degrade ecosystems and exacerbate social inequalities. It also tells readers about the essential principles needed for a sustainable economic paradigm. Finally, Ikerd concludes that embracing sustainable practices is not only a moral imperative but also a practical necessity. This book offers a useful analysis of economic sustainability and a recommendation that emphasizes ecological responsibility and social equity.
