ENVIROCOLLECTIVE

FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE LAST MONTH

Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation (SCIC) celebrated their 50th year during International Development week. EnviroCollective attended two functions to celebrate this milestone.

The first function was on February 7th, and it was a meet and greet along with SCIC member agencies and representatives from Global Affairs Canada. We had a chance to network with the many attendees and had a good discussion with staff of the Regina Immigrant Women's Center on potential micro enterprises we could work on.

On February 9th, ECN attended SCIC annual Global Citizen Awards gala at YQR Market. The event featured captivating guest speakers and entertainment, culminating in a heartfelt tribute to the long-serving volunteers who were honored as award recipients. https://www.saskcic.org/awards

EnviroCollective met with First Nations University students Dilynn, Kisis, and Twyla to delve into potential sustainability ventures and projects. Ranging from community gardens to healing medicines, the discussion culminated in a commitment to meet again and further explore collaborative opportunities.

INDUSTRY CHAMPIONS:

Red Leaf Pulp Ltd.

This month we are looking at Red Leaf Pulp Ltd. Red Leaf Pulp Ltd. was established by a group of experienced pulp and paper industry professionals looking to capitalize on the shift to providing a more sustainable pulp product to the market. They are beginning construction of their facility this year and will be up and running by 2026. Red Leaf will produce non-wood alternative fibre and renewable energy that is sustainable in production and use.

The initial facility is anticipated to utilize approximately 370,000 tonnes of wheat straw to produce 200,000 tonnes of pulp and 220,000 tonnes of co-produced per year. This facility in Regina will create 130+ direct jobs and bring $1.19 billion in economic benefits during the first 10 years of operations. As the process requires low energy and water use, production costs are significantly lower than those of existing wood fibre mills (between 50-60% of the cost). Red Leaf Pulp Ltd. is taking a major step towards sustainable manufacturing.

United Nations SDGs

We’ll share one sustainable development goal in each upcoming newsletter

"Embarking on a journey towards a sustainable future, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a roadmap for global progress. Encompassing 17 interconnected objectives, they address pressing issues such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental degradation. According to the UN, the SDGs aim to 'end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all' by 2030. These goals provide a framework for action, guiding governments, businesses, and individuals toward collective action. As outlined by the UNDP, achieving the SDGs requires collaboration, innovation, and commitment at all levels of society. Let's join hands to build a better world for generations to come." source The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
