HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE LAST MONTH

EnviroCollective was honoured to be able to host Dr. Amber Fletcher and PhD student Abraham Bugre to discuss their research and findings regarding climate hazards and gender. The lecture and discussion was well attended and we look forward to hosting more important conversations regarding climate change. You can learn more about how climate change disproportionately affects women and girls by clicking below and reading the factsheet provided by the United Nations.

RESOURCE FEATURE: THE CLIMATE BOOK by Greta Thunberg

McNally Robinson states "You might think it's an impossible task: secure a safe future for life on Earth, at a scale and speed never seen, against all the odds. There is hope - but only if we listen to the science before it's too late.

In The Climate Book, Greta Thunberg has gathered the wisdom of over one hundred experts... to equip us all with the knowledge we need to combat climate disaster. Throughout, illuminating and often shocking grayscale charts, graphs, diagrams, photographs, and illustrations underscore their research and their arguments. Alongside them, she shares her own stories of demonstrating and uncovering greenwashing around the world, revealing how much we have been kept in the dark. This is one of our biggest challenges, she shows, but also our greatest source of hope. Once we are given the full picture, how can we not act? And if a schoolchild's strike could ignite a global protest, what could we do collectively if we tried?

We are alive at the most decisive time in the history of humanity. Together, we can do the seemingly impossible. But it has to be us, and it has to be now."

ORGANIZATION HIGHLIGHT:

BETTER BUS YOUTH

Started in Saskatchewan Treaty 4 Territory in 2022, Better Bus Youth’s mission is to create accessible communities where every child can succeed. Through personal experience and witness, the grassroots youth organization recognizes how transportation barriers rob children of opportunities, friendships and dreams. Therefore, Better Bus Youth desires to support the City of Regina in embracing fare-free transit for youth 18 and under through a pilot program. Through the group’s efforts, they have rallied one hundred youths, twelve community organizations and 1550 community members’ support, sparking increased municipal and school board dialogues on fare-free transit. Better Bus Youth is raising their voices through art and song to call for eco-healthy communities on Earth Day, where anyone can participate or attend. To become involved, follow @betterbusyouth on Instagram or email betterbusyouth@gmail.com.

LOCAL BUSINESS HIGHLIGHT:

SS SHARPENING SERVICE

SS Sharpening Service is a family business that has been providing valuable recycling and reusing services since 1968. Run by Darren Wirth, SS Sharpening Service uses specialized equipment and techniques to efficiently sharpen tools and knives, extending their lifespan and reducing the need for replacements.

Not only does resharpening your old tools and knives help reduce waste and conserve natural resources, but it can also save you money in the long run. According to Wirth, a resharpened circular carbide tip saw blade can last for years, possibly even decades, and only costs between $14 and $50 to resharpen compared to the $170 to $400 cost of a new blade. Plus, the resharpening process only shaves off 1/3000 of an inch, resulting in less material waste and a longer lifespan for your sharpened tools and knives.

Visit SS Sharpening Service at 802 Angus Street in Regina or give them a call at 306.522.5144 to learn more about their eco-friendly and cost-effective sharpening services.
