ENVIROCOLLECTIVE

MAY NEWSLETTER

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE LAST MONTH

EnviroCollective was excited to be a part of this year's Cathedral Village Arts Festival! We had EnviroCollective buttons and brochures, "I Vote for Climate Action" signs, and sign up information for our socials and newsletter. We were also happy to be joined by two other Regina based environmental organizations, Fridays For Future Regina chapter (a youth run organization originally started by Greta Thunberg) and Regina Energy Transition, a group that is advocating for a just energy transition as well as for free public transition for Regina youth under 18.

EnviroCollective also worked with Bike Regina in the month of May to highlight Active Transportation in Regina through a social media awareness campaign as well as a friendly challenge to City Councillors and the Mayor to commute to work or school using active transportation. Four city councilors, Daniel LeBlanc, Cheryl Stadnichuk, Andrew Stevens, and Shanon Zachidniak agreed to participate! We recommend checking out Bike Regina for any active transportation needs you may have!

GRASSLANDS A HIDDEN WILDERNESS

-The Nature of Things (CBC GEM)

"When most Canadians think of the prairies, they think of roads stretching for kilometre after kilometre with barely a curve, or symmetrical lines of corn, canola and wheat reaching for the horizon. But, hidden just beyond our country’s croplands, there lies an unknown wilderness where a rich web of life relies on the specific conditions available only in the heartland of the continent.

Today, however, the wild prairie is a shadow of its former self. And temperate grasslands, as a whole, are now considered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature to be the most endangered — and least protected — habitat type in the world...

From producer Jeff Turner (The Wild Canadian Year, Nature’s Great Events, Frozen Planet), this film is an evocative exploration of a surprising landscape. Featuring never-before-filmed animal behaviour, the documentary takes audiences beyond the corn, canola and wheat fields, and into a hidden wilderness." (Grasslands: A Hidden Wilderness, 2023)

ORGANIZATION HIGHLIGHT:

CLIMATE REALITY PROJECT CANADA

The Climate Reality Project Canada is proud to be a member of an international community of Climate Reality affiliates. Since its establishment by Nobel Laureate and former Vice President Al Gore in 2006, Climate Reality Project has grown to have an official presence in over 150 countries. Climate Reality Project is dedicated to “catalyzing a global solution to the climate crisis by making urgent action a necessity across every level of society. To tackle climate change, we focus on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as its main culprit, and on education and grassroots action as the solution” (Climate Reality, 2021).

Climate Reality Project works to empower citizens by training them to be effective catalysts for change in their own regions and communities. CRP conducts research such as the National Climate League Standings Report, in addition to educating and empowering local people to take local action. Here in Saskatchewan, there are two local climate hubs, one in Saskatoon, the Saskatoon Climate Hub and one in Regina, EnviroCollective! There is also a designated Prairie Regional Engagement Coordinator for Climate Reality Project, Adrian Werner, who is based out of Winnipeg. At EnviroCollective, we have found that having a specific Prairie Regional Engagement Coordinator is extremely beneficial as it helps to keep our collective organized and aware of regional climate actions.
