April Highlights

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE LAST MONTH

EnviroCollective was invited to be part of a coalition group to support a Fridays For Future Climate Strike on April 19th. Many thanks to Art for Change, Regina Energy Transition, Saskatchewan Environmental Society, Kairos, and Regina Public Interest Research Group (RPIRG) for their help. It was a small but mighty crowd. The organizers had three key messages:

  1. Keep the global temperature rise below 1.5 °C compared to pre-industrial levels.
  2. Ensure climate justice and equity.
  3. Listen to the best-united science currently available.

EnviroCollective joined Nature Regina for a crocus walk, drawing a crowd of over 90 participants. Together, we embarked on a journey to rediscover a parcel of native prairie nestled within the city limits. This site, formerly the Craig Golf Links course, constitutes a 68-acre portion of city land bordering Wascana Creek, situated between Lewvan Drive and Sandra Schmirler Way. EnviroCollective values the opportunity to endorse events like this one, emphasizing the significance of preserving this patch of native prairie amidst potential development pressures.

EnviroCollective had the honor of joining SEVA's (Sask Electric Vehicle Association) Electrify Regina event held on April 20th at the Vitera International Trade Centre. The event garnered significant attendance from the general public eager to explore the experience of owning an EV in Saskatchewan. The day featured enlightening talks, presentations, and showcased a variety of EV models for visitors to examine. Gratitude is extended to sponsors like REV Auto and E-Bikes for their invaluable contributions to making this event possible.

DID YOU KNOW:

Empowering Home Energy Efficiency

When you purchase a new appliance or a new car, there is a sticker that tells you its energy efficiency. But when considering your biggest financial purchase, a home or a business location, you are not provided with an “energy guide” equivalent for it. Cities across Canada are changing that. For instance, Edmonton and Calgary have teamed up with the Canadian cleantech software company Lightspark to predict the energy use of all single-family homes. They created 84,996 digital home energy labels in just a three-month period. Likewise, the City of Saskatoon has partnered with OPEN Technologies to create an online tool for 62,000 homes that gives owners knowledge and motivation to improve their property’s energy efficiency. With this technology out there, it’s time for Regina to follow suit!

BUSINESS HIGHLIGHT:

Wascana Solar Co-op Share Offering

Wascana Solar Co-operative (WSC) introduced a new share offering on December 1, 2023, aiming to expand solar power generation in Regina. With plans to install up to 500 panels, WSC collaborates with public and private entities seeking eco-friendly solutions in order to build new solar arrays. Through long-term agreements, WSC installs panels on rooftops, funded by share sales to members. Revenue is generated through fees collected based on power production, covering project costs. This initiative enables businesses to reduce their carbon footprint without upfront investment. Over time, shareholders receive dividends, fostering sustainability while benefiting both the environment and participants.Their new share offering is still open!

United Nations SDGs

We’ll share one sustainable development goal in each upcoming newsletter

United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2, Zero Hunger, aims to eliminate hunger, ensure food security, enhance nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture globally by 2030. It targets addressing the root causes of hunger, ensuring access to nutritious and sufficient food for all, especially vulnerable populations. SDG 2 focuses on increasing agricultural productivity, supporting small-scale farmers, and promoting resilient agricultural practices in the face of climate change. It also aims to end malnutrition in all its forms, including stunting and wasting, and ensure access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food year-round. Ultimately, SDG 2 seeks to create a world where no one goes to bed hungry. In Saskatchewan, more than one in ten households and 19 percent of children experience food insecurity; those numbers continue to increase every day.
