Student Spotlight: Analyzing Regina’s Energy and Sustainability Framework

This month, we are excited to highlight the hard work of the students who recently completed their assignments by delving into The City of Regina’s Energy and Sustainability Framework. Through their research and analysis, the students have gained valuable insights into the city's initiatives and challenges in sustainability.

Starting this month, we will publish one or two of their findings in each newsletter, showcasing the depth and diversity of their work. We believe this will not only spotlight their efforts but also contribute to a broader understanding of sustainability practices in our community.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Nonprofit Voluntary Sector Studies Network (NVSSN) and Dr. Brent Dolter for providing this incredible opportunity. Their support and guidance have been instrumental in engaging the class in meaningful and impactful sustainability research. Stay tuned for the upcoming findings!

Over The Hill Orchard

Collects rainwater of of solar panels

Over the Hill Orchards has been collecting rainwater off of all of their buildings since inception 24 years ago and provides 3000 gallons per inch of rain. A new rain collection system is being developed by placing a food grade pond liner on the sloped ground around their solar panels. During a rain, and also in the event of morning dew, water is directed via gravity to an underground cistern. This will collect another 3000 gallons per inch of rain. Once this project is completed, a pond liner will be placed in a larger collection area that has a dugout, and will provide an additional 8000 gallons of water.

United Nations SDGs

We’ll share one sustainable development goal in each upcoming newsletter

Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG5) Gender Equality - The world is not on track to achieve gender equality by 2030, worsened by the pandemic's impact. Progress is lagging in areas like unpaid care work, sexual and reproductive health decision-making, and gender-responsive budgeting. Women's health services face major disruptions, and violence against women remains endemic. Despite leading in COVID-19 responses, women still lag in decision-making roles. Bold action is needed to promote gender equality through laws, policies, budgets, and institutions. Greater investment in gender statistics is vital, as less than half of the necessary data to monitor Goal 5 are currently available.

Right here in Saskatchewan, the reality of domestic and intimate partner violence is alarmingly grim. The province holds one of the highest rates of such violence in Canada, with Indigenous women and girls bearing the brunt of this crisis. They are tragically far more likely to be murdered or go missing compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts. Across the board, women are disproportionately subjected to various forms of violence, including the pervasive threats of intimate partner violence and cyber violence. The situation is dire, demanding urgent attention and action (Canada Womens Foundation) (Women and Gender Equality Canada)

ORGANIZATION HIGHLIGHT:

KAIROS Regina

KAIROS Regina is a small ecumenical group affiliated with KAIROS Canada, an ecumenical justice coalition. Their central program focus is education and action on climate justice. They view climate change as an issue of justice: social, economic and ecological.

In 2021 via Zoom we launched a “climate change conversation” program based on the Canada-

wide “For the Love of Creation” program. This led to several information/discussion sessions in Saskatchewan churches.

In 2022 we held an in-person/livestream event promoting church energy retrofits, described in

the blog post “Never a Better Time.”

In 2024 Heat Pumps in Saskatchewan: What You Should Know was a popular in-person / livestream event in Regina. Watch Video

Kairos was instrumental in getting two Regina elementary schools to have schoolyard tree planting projects in June 2023: they planted approximately 40 trees.

The Hampton Hub

Tiro and Thabo Mthembu wanted to give back to their neighbourhood, and what better way to do that than with food? Together with friends, they opened Hampton Hub, a vibrant restaurant in the heart of Regina. Hampton Hub was more than just a place to eat; it was a cultural experience. The restaurant hosted charity events and engaged the community every week with Teach-In Tuesdays.

In honour of their namesake, American civil rights leader Fred Hampton, Teach-In Tuesdays became a weekly gathering for community engagement and vibrant conversation. These events strengthened their goal of being community connectors, fostering a sense of unity and pride among the diverse groups and causes that came through their doors.

Fred Hampton, the charismatic leader of the Illinois Black Panther Party, was known for his skill in building coalitions among disparate groups. His most significant achievement was creating the Rainbow Coalition, which united marginalized groups like the Black Panthers, the Young Lords (a Puerto Rican activist group), and the Young Patriots (a white working-class organization from Appalachia). Hampton recognized that unity among these groups was essential to effectively challenge systemic issues like poverty, discrimination, and police brutality.

Climate Jargon by The Energy Mix

COP - The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Established in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the UNFCCC aims to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere to prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.

The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change. It was adopted by 196 Parties (or countries) at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris, France, in December 2015. It entered into force in November 2016. Its overarching goal is to hold “the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels” and pursue efforts “to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.”

UNFCCC - The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an international treaty that was established in 1992. It commits Parties to act together to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations “at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic (human-induced) interference with the climate system.” The UNFCCC provided the basis for the agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.

IN THE NEWS:

Survey Says - An opinion article by Stewart Coles, interim executive director at the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, highlights a survey of 1,064 Saskatchewan residents aged 16 and over. The survey found 89% want the province to meet its 12% land and water protection commitment, with 78% advocating for an even higher target. Additionally, 90% believe protecting wildlife, grasslands, and wetlands should be a top priority. The majority also agree that the government should not drain or remove wetlands without proper assessment. Despite a 1990s promise, only 9% of Saskatchewan’s nature is currently protected.

Industrial carbon pricing is crucial for deploying carbon capture - CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage) projects are crucial for Canada to achieve its net-zero emissions goals. The recently enacted investment tax credit will cover up to half the capital costs for CCUS, highlighting its importance in decarbonizing industrial operations. Although CCUS technology is versatile and capable of capturing carbon dioxide from industrial processes, it has been expensive and often underperformed. Effective public policy, including well-designed carbon pricing, is essential to overcome these challenges and maximize the potential of CCUS in Canada's climate strategy. In a World Bank survey of 300 cities in Europe, 67% indicated that they prefer an approach that combines adaptation with climate action.

For example, a holistic approach using solar panels, white-painted roofs and surfaces and rooftop gardens can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience to urban heat.

New battery storage system to alleviate pressures on Saskatchewan power grid

The province has launched its first-ever utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), marking a significant step towards reducing emissions. This innovative system allows for the storage of energy from intermittent sources like wind and solar, ensuring a stable power supply to the grid when needed.

The BESS provides added flexibility by balancing loads during demand spikes, offering up to 20 MW of power, sufficient to power 20,000 homes for an hour. The system comprises 12 battery containers on a site about the size of a football field, demonstrating a substantial commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
