How to reduce waste over the festive season

The festive season is a time for celebration, but it often comes with increased waste from excess packaging to leftover food. This Christmas can be more sustainable with reduced consumption choices and using your kerbside bins correctly.

  • Reduce before you recycle
  • Plan your meals to avoid food waste.
  • Choose quality over quantity when buying gifts, consider experiences, or locally made items with less packaging.
  • Use reusable gift bags, fabric wraps, or recycled paper instead of single use wrapping.
  • Avoid disposable tableware and opt for washable plates and cutlery.
  • Batteries don’t belong in any bin. Drop them off at council’s Civic Centre, libraries, or find locations at B-cycle.

Unsure what goes where? Visit Which Bin

December Frog Census

Help us track frog populations across South Australia during the first week of December with the FrogWatch SA Seasonal Census. From 1 to 8 December, you can record frog calls using the FrogSpotter app or FrogWatch SA webpage.

Frogs are incredibly sensitive to pollution and habitat destruction and with numbers declining over the world, we need to better understand their distribution, Habitat and breeding.

This knowledge will enable conservation efforts to be better targeted and more effective. Recordings can be taken in your garden, local park, native bushland or waterways. Every call counts and your contributions will make a real difference!

Migratory Shorebirds Workshop

Did you know that over 15,000 migratory shorebirds leave their breeding grounds and fly thousands of kilometers to visit Adelaide each summer? The visitors include pocket sized Red-necked Stints. They join our resident shorebirds who use our beaches and wetlands to raise their young. If you are curious about shorebirds, this workshop is for you!

Birdlife Australia and Green Adelaide invite you to learn about these amazing birds and see them feeding and roosting along the shore at St Kilda, SA. On Saturday 6th December, with support from Friends of Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary (FAIBS) and Birds SA, we will view the birds on the outgoing tide before morning tea and a presentation.
