The last commandment is unique. Unlike the other nine, it is a law given to govern our thoughts! It gets at the root of the problem that leads to breaking laws 6,7,8 & 9. If we covet our neighbor's stuff we desire to eliminate them (murder) so we can take their place. If we covet our neighbor's spouse we want to be with them (adultery). If we covet our neighbor's car, house, etc. our ultimate goal is to take it from them (stealing). And, finally, we need to cover up that sin with a whole lot of lying and deception which brings us to commandment # 9. And, coincidentally, if all of our thoughts are bent on what we don't have and what our neighbor does have that we want--we're breaking all the other commandments too.
The 10th commandment moves us beyond looking good on the outside to looking good on the inside. It calls us to a life of contentment. If we can be content with what we have, then we live a life of gratefulness to God. It is hard to be grateful when we are consumed with what we don't have. "Do not covet" captures a whole world of potential evil that could be brewing in us.
So how do we turn our hearts from the comparison game that is multiplied tenfold in a media-driven, materialistic culture? How do we sow seeds of contentment? If we can figure that out, we can come closer to the joy and peacefulness we were made for as God's children. You might start by scanning the list of announcements below. Look for opportunities to invest yourself in other people and their needs. Serving others chips away at our envious nature. We'll talk more this weekend.
See you Sunday!
We will be meeting every Monday at 7 pm.
