Happy 2022 to you all! As of January 3, our Masters in Health Data Science (MiHDaS) program is accepting applications – it’s so exciting to see this vision realized after so many months of work! We also begin the new year with Scarlett Gomez in place as our new Vice Chair for Faculty Development. As ever, our department is making meaningful contributions to public health debates – to take but one example, three of our faculty members, Margaret Handley, Paul Wesson and Yulin Hswen, authored a piece in the Annual Review of Public Health on how to make the most of Big Data without inadvertently locking disparities in place. Our staff continues to exceed job descriptions, too, and behind each one of these accomplishments are many hard-working, inspired staff members. Thanks to all of you for doing what you do!
- Kirsten

Emma Greenstreet, working with Vinay Prasad, won a Short-Term Dean’s Prize in Research & Scholarship for the 2021-22 year for her project entitled, “Characteristics of Oncology Podcasts: Attitudes, Speakers, Conflicts.” The goal was to systematically appraise the landscape of oncology podcasts and the physicians who appear on them. The results showed that the majority of physicians featured on oncology podcasts have undisclosed conflicts. There is an opportunity for professional standards to be inserted into medical podcasts to ensure that content meets a certain threshold similar to continuing medical education.
