As we enter the last round of our fight against COVID-19, racist violence against Asian Americans has also intensified, leading to some very troubling incidents right here in the Bay Area. As a University community, we again affirm – as we did over the summer when police violence against Black Americans dominated the news – our commitment to equity and inclusion for all of the diverse groups, ethnic and otherwise, represented in the United States, California, in our health system and on our campus. Many of our colleagues are part of Asian diaspora communities. We see you, and we are here for you.

The 2020 NIH rankings were released last month, and once again UCSF tops the list for NIH funding for schools of medicine. Notably, UCSF is on the top 10 list for NIH funding for public health, with a record total of more than $20 million! This achievement is thanks to the hard work of all of you in DEB and our colleagues in the Institute for Global Health Sciences. Congratulations!

I hope that you all take time and space to take care of yourselves during these continued challenging times. This edition of the newsletter details just some of the many ways you and the Department are continuing to have an impact. Thank you for your amazing work.
