Fall semester is here! We all hoped that the pandemic would have taken a back seat by now, but, given the circumstances, most of our work will continue to be virtual through 2021. The pandemic has been both disruptive and trying, and I know many of us have faced real personal costs. Even so, we should celebrate what we have accomplished – and the work we continue to do – together. There is a lot to celebrate.
As we start the new academic year, we are rolling out an annual report for 2020. Please check it out and share the link when there’s an opportunity to introduce people to the breadth and quality of our work.
The department continues to produce a mountain of peer-reviewed publications on a wide range of topics, and – something I think we should be especially proud of – our trainees are earning significant recognition. We also have a booster crop of exciting new graduate students starting this fall.
Sincerely,
Kirsten

Rebecca Smith-Bindman (she/her), MD, moved her primary academic home from radiology to EpiBio, where she had been secondary faculty, in July. Many of you may know her already, but do welcome her into our inner circle! Dr. Smith-Bindman’s Radiology Outcomes Research Laboratory studies the cancer risk associated with CT scans and on how to optimize and improve CT imaging safety and quality. Dr. Smith-Bindman brought a seven-member team with her.

Our postdocs have earned an array of laurels. Alicia Riley won the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Sciences (IAPHS) postdoctoral fellow award. Ellie Matthay won the Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER) postdoctoral fellow award. Former postdoc Elizabeth Rose Mayeda won the SER early career award in 2020. Because she was on parental leave, she gave the talk at this year's conference.
