Written in the Stars
This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, recalling the story of the Magi who travel and visit the Holy Family in their temporary dwelling place.
The Magi are guided by the light of a star, following it for a thousand miles, through short dark days, and longer dark nights. They aren't sure where they are going; they don't know their destination or the length of their journey; and yet, they trust in the fragile light of that distant star to bring them to safety to the place God calls them.
Some churches have a practice, to mark the trust of the Magi in the guidance of a star, for parishioners to choose a "star word" - one word of the Spirit written on a paper star. Chosen randomly, people are invited to receive this star as God's gift, a word that can guide, inspire, and challenge them throughout the coming year.
I'll have a selection of paper Epiphany stars, each with its own unique word, and I invite you to choose a star this Sunday. Carry this word with you - ponder it in your heart like Mary - and notice when your word comes in in conversation, in your reading, and in all that you do throughout the year. Keep your star nearby - on your refrigerator, your coffee station, on your desk, in your wallet - and let this be your guide as you trust in God to lead you this coming year.
Blessings,
Rev Jill
