Bishop Hayashi Invites All to The Tuttle School

Bishop Scott B. Hayashi and the Diocese are excited to announce the new Tuttle School for Discipleship and Ministry. The local program is designed to serve those wanting a deeper understanding of their faith and to offer formation for those seeking to hear God’s calling. Bishop Hayashi is facilitating a meaningful start to the Tuttle School courses with a lively and uplifting review of the New Testament starting this fall. The course is free and open to all and will be offered on Saturday mornings starting in September. Bishop Hayashi has prepared a video to personally invite church members and friends.

The full Tuttle School curriculum starts in February, 2020. While the full program is primarily for those preparing for ordination to the diaconate and for lay ministry licenses, it is also open for all who are committed to deepening their understanding of the Jesus movement, to strengthen their ministries, and/or discern their path as disciples. The Tuttle School is in partnership with the Iona Collaborative, a program of the Seminary of the Southwest located in Austin, Texas. However, all Tuttle School classes will take place at the Episcopal Church Center of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Statement from Bishop Hayashi on Utah Medicaid Expansion Issue
"You may have read that the waivers that the Utah Legislature was hoping to receive to implement the version of Medicaid Expansion that passed in 2019 have been denied.

Fortunately, through extensive work by many people who testified for the need to have a backup plan, as well as work by Representatives Ward and Dunnigan, the bill that was passed (Senate Bill 96 - S.B.96) included the provision that if Utah did not receive the waivers, then in place of the Utah version of Medicaid expansion, Proposition 3 would be enacted (with some adjustments.)

However, at this time, there has been no concrete statement that this will be the legislature's course of action. Statements of assurance have been made that those who rely upon Medicaid will remain covered.

While I trust that our political leaders in Utah will work to make sure that those who rely upon Medicaid will not lose their coverage, I would be happier to hear a statement that they will honor what they passed with S.B. 96.

Therefore, I encourage you to write to your Senator and Representative expressing that what they passed should be honored ."

-- The Rt. Rev. Scott B. Hayashi --

More information about the rejection of advanced federal funding for Medicaid can be found in t his article by The Salt Lake Tribune.
Utah Epodcopalians Podcast Episode Eight Addresses Immigration
"When you welcome the stranger, you welcome Jesus. The book of Hebrews in the New Testament says those who have welcomed the strangers have sometimes welcomed angels unawares." -  Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry

Immigration is an issue that divides our nation, separates families and causes great pain to many. Listen here  to episode eight of Utah Epodcopalians, "Welcome the Stranger." The Rt. Rev. Scott Hayashi and The Rev. Dr. Pablo Ramos discuss The Episcopal Church's stance on immigration and what we can do as individuals to follow Jesus and support those who are directly affected by this issue.
Big Springs Worship Service and Picnic
St. Elizabeth’s Church of Whiterocks, Church of the Holy Spirit of Randlett, and St. Paul's Vernal gathered at Big Springs Park on June 14th along with Bishop Scott B. Hayashi. About 70 people joined in the worship service and picnic, which was set right along the Uintah River. The Rev. Michael Carney says that everyone enjoyed beautiful music and a wonderful sermon from the Bishop.

Bishop Hayashi wore a special beaded stole for the occasion. The stole was made more than 25 years ago by Whiterocks beading artist Connie Manning. It was then presented to The Rev. N. Jean Rogers at her ordination. The Rev. Rogers recently offered the stole as a gift to the Bishop and the Diocese of Utah.
