Letter from Bishop Doug - COVID-19 Vaccine
|
|
Dear Sisters, Brothers, Siblings,
Grace and peace be with you in Jesus, the Light for all people!
I am writing to encourage every person in our diocese who is able to receive the COVID 19 Vaccine...to consider getting vaccinated. I'm confident in the research that developed the vaccines and grateful to God for the scientists along with the thousands of people who offered themselves for the clinical trials these last many months...so that we, members of the human family in this nation and throughout the world, could receive a life-saving vaccine. I know there may be some who may be concerned about taking the vaccine. If you are, I encourage you to talk with your healthcare provider, share your concerns so that they can be addressed by medical professionals you trust. I often invoke the Anglican principal...All may, None must and Some should...in addressing questions and important decisions in our common life. I am encouraging you to consider this principal at this crucial time in our common life as well. Glory to God whose power working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation in the Church and in Christ Jesus, forever and ever. Amen! This comes with a brother's love.
The Rt. Rev. Dr. Douglas E. Sparks
VIII Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Indiana

Service to Commemorate the Feast of Absalom Jones
Date: February 13
Time: 11/10 a.m. (EST/CST)
Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis is hosting a service to commemorate the Feast of Absalom Jones that will be broadcast on their Facebook page and website. Bishop Deon Johnson of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri will preach.
The Episcopal Church's annual Feast of Absalom Jones commemorates a man who was born into slavery in 1746 in Delaware and worked for eight years to buy his wife's freedom so that their children would be free. His master refused to allow him to purchase his own freedom, but in 1784 granted him a manumission. A gifted lay preacher, Jones led the founding of the Free African Society, a mutual aid benevolent organization in Philadelphia that became the first black Episcopal church in the United States. He was also a lay leader at a white-led church in Philadelphia until the church's leaders forced segregation during worship. He was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1804.
Find an updated biography of Absalom Jones in Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018, available online.

Life Transformed - The Way of Love in Lent (revised for 2021)
Date: Saturdays, February 27, March 6, 13, & 20
Time: 10/9 a.m. (EST/CST)
Where: Zoom
Facilitator: Bishop Doug Sparks
The journey through Lent into Easter is a journey with Jesus. We are baptized into his life, self- giving, and death; then, we rise in hope to life transformed. This Lent, communities are invited to walk with Jesus in his Way of Love and into the experience of transformed life. Together, we will reflect anew on the loving actions of God as recounted in the Easter Vigil readings. Together, we will walk through the depths of salvation history into the fullness of redemption. This Quiet Day for Lent ties the Easter Vigil readings to the seven practices of the Way of Love. Drawing on the ancient practice of setting aside Lent as a period of study and preparation for living as a Christian disciple (known as the catechumenate), this curriculum encourages participants to reflect on salvation history; walk toward the empty tomb; and embrace the transforming reality of love, life, and liberation. As we stand with the three women at the empty tomb, we hear his call to go and live that transformed reality.
- Session I: Introduction to the Way of Love and a Rule of Life; TURN: Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ (Romans 6:3-11)
- Session II: PRAY: Israel’s Deliverance at the Red Sea (Exodus 14:10-15:1); LEARN: Learn Wisdom and Live (Proverbs 8:1-8, 19-21; 9:4b-6)
- Session III: BLESS: A New Heart and a New Spirit (Ezekiel 36:24-28); REST: The Valley of Dry Bones (Ezekiel 37:1-14)
- Session IV: WORSHIP: The Gathering of God’s People (Zephaniah 3:12-20); GO: The Empty Tomb (Luke 24:1-12)

Security Guide for Churches
from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security
|
|
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency within the United States Department of Homeland Security published a security guide in December titled, "Mitigating Attacks on Houses of Worship" that can be found here. Please take some time to review this documentation. It is important that each of our faith communities are prepared for any emergency situation that could arise.
If you have not already done so, we would encourage your faith community to put together a security team. St. Andrew's (Valparaiso) has done a lot of work in this area and has presented to groups within the Diocese on a couple of occasions. Please reach out to them if you have any questions on how to get a security team up and running.
