This morning during the city council meeting, I voted in favor of a motion to delay agenda item 55L, the proposed Equal Rights Ordinance, to the next scheduled city council meeting. My decision was made to provide City of Houston stakeholders with an opportunity to understand the impact and significance of this ordinance.

As Houstonians, we stand for the principal of non-discrimination against others, and this proposed ordinance raises critical issues, on which all stakeholders should be able to provide input.

During the delay period, my office will schedule a town hall meeting with constituents and community leaders to analyze the ordinance and hear community input. This makes for a transparent process. As we talk about inclusion for all, let us agree to hear from all voices. Let us ensure that the millions of residents in our city have an opportunity to understand the ordinance and not just those who are around the council table and who gain access to the council chamber.
