World leaders urged to act on 'post-antibiotic apocalypse' by Chief Medical Officer

Professor Dame Sally Davies warns that resistance to treatments a growing threat that could mean 'the end of modern medicine'.

England's chief medical officer has warned of a "post-antibiotic apocalypse" as she issued a call to action urging global leaders to address the growing threat of antibiotic resistance.

Professor Dame Sally Davies said that if antibiotics lose their effectiveness it will spell "the end of modern medicine". Without the drugs used to fight infections, common medical interventions such as caesarean sections, cancer treatments and hip replacements would become incredibly "risky", she said. And transplant medicine would be a "thing of the past", she added.

"We really are facing, if we don't take action now, a dreadful post-antibiotic apocalypse.
"I don't want to say to my children that I didn't do my best to protect them and their children."
Health experts have previously warned that resistance to antimicrobial drugs could cause a bigger threat to mankind than cancer.

More than half of cancer drugs may not work, suggests study 
Research published in the British Medical Journal finds 39 out of 68 new treatments approved with no supporting evidence of better survival rates or improved quality of life.

A number of cancer drugs entered the European market "without evidence of benefit on survival or quality of life", researchers have said.
All new cancer drugs are given Europe-wide market approval through the European Medicines Agency (EMA). But a new study, published in The British Medical Journal (BMJ), found that of cancer drugs approved by the EMA between 2009 and 2013, 57% (39/68) had no supporting evidence of better survival or quality of life when they entered the market. 
After an average of five years of follow up, only half had shown a survival or quality of life gain over existing treatments or placebo.
For the remaining 33 (49%), "uncertainty remains over whether the drugs extend survival or improve quality of life", according to the authors from King's College London and the London School of Economics and Political Science.
And of the 23 drugs with a survival benefit that could be scored with a validated tool, only 11 (48%) were judged to offer a clinically meaningful benefit, they added.
As a result of the findings, the researchers have called on the EMA to increase the evidence bar for the market authorisation of new cancer drugs.

But how do you get the most out of massage? Here are some things your therapist wants you to know:

It's OK to undress
Therapists recommend undressing to the point where you feel comfortable. Remember that therapists are trained professionals and your undressing enables them to use long soothing strokes directly on your skin. With the exception of Hawaiian Massage, you normally keep your undergarments on. Some massages such as Shiatsu are performed through clothing, and without oils, so you remain fully dressed. For these treatments, wear loose comfortable garments that allow you to stretch freely.

Go to the gym before, not after, your massage
Working out immediately after a massage is not a good idea as you are likely to stress and strain the muscles that were just relaxed. It is much better to rest or even sleep. If you feel the need to move, take a short stroll instead. It is best to wait 12 hours or so to allow for healing time from the massage before intense physical exercise.  
Timing is key
Whilst you can have massage at any time of the day, consider the timing of your appointment. Choose a time when you can fully focus on the treatment, and allow time for relaxation afterwards. Avoid rushing back to work or chores.  
More is better
Receive massage as frequently as possible. It lowers your risk of suffering from an injury. Use regular massage as part of your strategy to fight stress and reduce its impact on your health.

An affordable way to learn a new healing art and to enhance your existing therapeutic skills!

Reiki Master Susan Hall will be holding a Reiki Level 1 Course over 2 Sundays. As part of the course each student will be attuned to the Reiki healing energy. This process then allows the student to give healing to themselves and others throughout their lifetime.
Sue's classes are friendly and informal, and you will experience the simple method of how Reiki is performed. Learning Reiki is not an academic exercise so it is suitable for people of all ages.

Reiki allows the recipient to enter a state of balance where healing can take place. It is a transformational energy that can be life changing.
On successful completion of the 2 day course, you will receive a Reiki Level 1 Certificate. The course runs from 10.00am to 5.00pm each day and the cost of £150 includes free refreshments throughout the course.
