Biomarker Research to Understand Joint Health

MicroRNAs are differentially expressed in equine plasma of horses with osteoarthritis according to research study. In a pathfinding study, Ontario Veterinary College researchers are finding certain miRNAs could be used to predict the onset of joint diseases, potentially leading to earlier and more effective treatments.


Not only could micoRNAs be early predictors of OA and OCD but there is excitement over the potential for them to play a role in targeting new treatments.

Equine Guelph supports a number of high-quality projects at the University of Guelph, by virtue of funding provided largely by the racing industry (Standardbred, Thoroughbred and Quarter horse organizations): the Horse Improvement Program from the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association and the E.P. Taylor Foundation, started by veterinarians in the Thoroughbred industry, and now maintained in trust by the University and Equine Guelph.

Researchers Reach out to ON Riding Schools for Management & Horse Behaviour Study

Researchers, who are also equestrians, at the University of Guelph are seeking 23 hunter/jumper lesson facilities (min 4 lesson horses), within three hours of Guelph to volunteer their facility for data collection in an upcoming study.

The aim is to identify strategies to help lesson horses thrive.
