Good afternoon Team,

The 2023 DOE Seer2 transition is drawing closer and we know both you and your customers have a growing number of questions. Although unitary manufacturing dates are not concrete at this moment, we wanted to provide you with as much information as possible to guide your customers through this change. The below provides a quick snapshot of the transition, describes our current transition plan, advises what your customers should plan for, as well as provides helpful resources.
What is the 2023 DOE Seer2 Transition?

Starting on January 1, 2023, all residential air-conditioning and heat pump products are going through a change in how equipment efficiency is measured. This transition to SEER2 is accompanied by efficiency increases for split systems in air-conditioning and heat pumps. Heat pumps are going through a nationwide efficiency increase and split system air-conditioners are going through regional efficiency increases.
What equipment does the transition affect in the Southeast Region?
Please see the below charts from Goodman MFG showing when and what can be sold by equipment product family. Ware Group Customers should refer to the SE column.
What Does Your Contractor Need to Know?.
  • Any AC system that doesn't meet SEER2 requirements (Below 18 Seer) cannot be installed on or after January 1, 2023. All systems manufactured after January 1, 2023, must meet the new Seer2 requirements with a minimum Seer2 of 14.3 (Equivalent to 15 Seer).
  • Existing 14.0 SEER heat pumps built prior to January 1, 2023, cannot be manufactured, but may still be sold and installed on or after January 1, 2023.
  • Existing 14.0 SEER single packaged units built prior to January 1, 2023, cannot be manufactured, but may still be sold and installed on or after January 1, 2023. All systems manufactured after January 1, 2023, must meet the new Seer2 requirements with a minimum Seer2 of 13.4 (Equivalent to 14 Seer).
  • Your contractor should expect new model numbers for Split AC and Heat pumps for the 2023 selling season.
  • New model numbers should begin to transition in late summer through the end of 2022.
  • The below video provides estimated dates for first availability, but we will have more information out once we have concrete dates confirmed

Please watch Goodman's overview of the 2023 Seer2 Transition. The video contains everything from the explanation of Seer2, overall regulations, new model number info, and available dates for distributors (Please note these are subject to change).

  • Transition Training
  • We are finalizing dates for a "Preparing for 2023" virtual workshop next month that will be put on by Goodman for all our Goodman, Amana, Daikin dealers to participate in.
  • There will be a series of regionalized in-person events in May for our dealers to attend that will educate and prepare them for the 2023 selling season. An announcement will be sent out in the near future with dates.
