Erin Centre 2000 receives funding
First a piece of great news. Earlier this month, we found out that the Town of Erin was successful in its funding application for renovations to the Erin Community Centre. Dubbed the Erin Community Centre Rehabilitation and Renovation, the federal and provincial governments will contribute $1,056,000 and $879,912, while the Town of Erin will contribute $704,088.

The $2.64 million upgrade will see the installation of a fixed emergency generator, health and safety upgrades to the electrical, HVAC and refrigeration systems, roof structure replacement, and a new alarm system, in addition to accessibility improvements to the elevator, washroom, and signage.

Town Council has been looking to create a shelter in case of natural disaster or emergencies. With the funding going towards an emergency generator Centre 2000 will be designated as an emergency structure once renovations are complete.
Sidewalk inspections
If you happen to come across this robot , then know that it's out and about inspecting the sidewalk. The Town of Erin has partnered with Kitchener-Waterloo based start-up Top Hat Robotics, to begin sidewalk inspections, starting mid-August.

This new robot is not fully-autonomous and a staff member will need to accompany the new temporary town 'employee'.

When inspecting the sidewalk, the robot will be looking for cracks, step hazards and dips where ponding could happen. And here's the cool part - it will upload the information on a geographic information mapping system, providing the exact location and details of the repairs required, making the process efficient and cost- effective.

Firing up the grill? Stay fire safe
It’s summer and BBQ time. While you are finessing your grill to perfection, here are some fire safety tips to be mindful of.

  • Use BBQs outdoors only.
  • Never leave the BBQ unattended when in use.
  • Make sure grease does not build up on the burners or at the base of the BBQ. This could cause a grease fire.
  • Never throw water on a grease fire – this will only spread the flame.
  • DO NOT place the BBQ close to wooden fences or walls, vinyl siding, or anything that can burn. The area behind your BBQ must be free of anything that can ignite – this is where hot gases escape.
  • Keep loose clothing away from a hot BBQ. Keep children and pets at least one metre (three feet) away from a hot BBQ.
  • When finished barbecuing, turn the gas valve off first, then turn off the burner controls so no gas is left in the connecting hose. Allow the BBQ to cool completely before closing the cover.

For more safety information visit the Office of the Fire Marshal's (OFM) website.
