Retail Cannabis Survey
The use of recreational cannabis became legal in Canada on October 17, 2018. Ontario has elected to allow for recreational cannabis to be sold on-line or in privately operated retail stores. The location and operation of these private stores will be under the control of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), which is also responsible for regulating gaming and alcohol sales in the province. The Town of Erin is considering whether Erin should opt-in or opt-out of private retail sales of cannabis.

Town Council wants to directly hear from residents on this matter. This survey is open for the entire month of July. The Town will review the public’s input along with other relevant data, inputs and trends before deciding on whether to opt-in or opt-out of allowing the legal retail sales of cannabis in Erin.
Lawn and Garden Watering by-law
With the summer upon us, water usage automatically goes up. Did you know that the Town has Erin has a Lawn and Garden Watering By-law that restricts the use of municipally supplied water for outdoor purposes to specific days and times? Generally, outdoor water use includes watering lawns and gardens, washing vehicles, sidewalks or driveways and filling swimming pools.
 
The daily watering restrictions for outdoor water use are as follows:
 
  • An EVEN numbered address may use water outdoors ONLY ON EVEN NUMBERED DAYS between the hours of 7 and 10 am, and 7 and 11 pm.
  • An ODD numbered address may use water outdoors ONLY ON ODD NUMBERED DAYS between the hours of 7 and 10 am, and 7 and 11 pm.

Wastewater project updates
Geotechnical work was just completed at the Lion’s Club Park in Erin and will be underway around Trafalgar Road N and the Elora-Cataract Trail, west of Wellington Road 22, in Hillsburgh.

This work includes borehole drilling and is being done for the upcoming sanitary sewers and sewage pumping stations project. So what does that mean?

  •  A geotechnical investigation is required whenever pipes and structures are to be installed underground
  •  Boreholes are used to obtain an accurate picture of what kind of soil can be found where the pipes and structures are to be installed
  •  Boreholes are a way to get samples of the soils at the different depths and are done using a drilling machine
  • The length of time to drill a borehole depends on the depth of the borehole and the type of soils in the ground
  • Some boreholes are made into wells that are used to monitor the groundwater levels.

Erin Farmers’ Market is back

Plant trees for free with CVC

Join your neighbours in taking advantage of Credit Valley Conservation’s (CVC) subsidized tree planting program. Erin residents with properties of two acres or more in the Credit River Watershed can receive funding to cover up to 100 per cent of the cost of reforesting areas of their properties. CVC will create a planting plan designed specifically for you, provide the trees and plant them for you.
 
CVC is working to increase tree cover in the Credit River Watershed to 30 per cent—the threshold for healthy watershed communities. With nearly 90 per cent of the land in the watershed privately owned, rural landowners have a unique opportunity to restore our natural areas.

Pet Fire Safety Day

Did you know its Pet Fire Safety Day on July 15? Pets are our family members and can be equally at risk during fire emergencies. Some important things to remember are:

  • knowing your pet’s hiding spots
  • pet proofing your house which includes keeping hazards out of paw’s reach, like flammables or electrical wires
  • making sure your pet is microchipped or wearing ID in case of separation, and
  • having an emergency plan with a safe location that is regularly practiced amongst family members including your pets.

Remember, keep your children close during a fire emergency and ensure that they don’t run back inside to rescue a pet.
