7 Reasons Why Emotional Leaders Are the Future
Fast Company | Sunny Bonnell and Ashleigh Hansberger
July 21, 2022

Emotional, sensitive, intuitive leaders will be vital to any organization that hopes to achieve success in the next decade. Lisa Kimmel assumed she could keep it together for her virtual town hall. It was April of 2020, one month into the whirling funhouse of horrors that would become the COVID-19 pandemic. Kimmel—Edelman’s chair and CEO of Canada & Latin America—was addressing 250 of her Canadian employees about how they were adjusting to the wrenching changes in their work and home lives. As she set up, she wrote in the Toronto Star, she felt calm and ready.
How to Repair a Broken CEO-Board Chair Relationship
ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership | Mark Athitakis
Jun 20, 2022

Distrust at the top can be surprisingly common at associations, and enduring, one researcher found. Fixing it requires both long- and short-term planning. When it comes to the relationship between an association CEO and the board chair, trust is critical. But what do you do when that trust is lacking? Dr. M. Louise Walters, founder and CEO of the consultancy the Leadership Center, recently completed her PhD thesis research on CEO-board chair relations at 501(c)(6) business leagues [PDF]. In conversation with 10 CEOs, she found that four of them didn’t trust their board chair.
Nonbinary Pronoun Usage in the Workplace: What Employers Are Doing to Promote Inclusivity
Ogletree Deakins | Kelly S. Hughes. Alan J. Brozovich,
Zachary V. Zagger | July 12, 2022

Using the correct pronouns and honorifics in the workplace has become an increasingly important part of maintaining an inclusive workplace. At the same time, the sensitive nature of this trend and the many variations of pronouns and honorifics in use may leave employers confused as to how to accomplish that goal. Moreover, employers may be concerned with how to comply with employees’ requests in an ever-evolving space and with the increasing use of nonbinary pronouns.
To Win the War for Talent, Employers Need to Fix What's Driving Employees Away
Employee Benefits News | Alyssa Place | July 19, 2022

For weary HR leaders and business managers, who have already had to guide their teams through the relentless challenges of the pandemic, retaining employees and rebuilding their workforce is becoming yet another insurmountable challenge.
Where should employers start? By listening to the employees who are leaving, offering support to those who stay, and following COVID-borne trends — like remote work — that have become a permanent part of work culture.
Big Brother’s Watching: Workplace Surveillance Is Violating Employees' Trust
Employee Benefit News | Paola Peralta | July 13, 2022

It may be easy to always want to know what your employees are up to at work, but if employers want to build a loyal workforce, they may need to work on staying in the dark.
Three in four bosses are surveilling their staff, according to a recent study by VPN service provider ExpressVPN. Ninety percent actively track time spent by employees doing work versus other activities unrelated to work, and 46% say they’ve terminated an employee based on information collected related to their remote work.
The Pandemic Changed Us. Now Companies Have to Change Too.
Harvard Business Review | Jennifer Moss | July 01, 2022

It may sound obvious but facing our collective mortality for the last two years changed us. Of course, many of us had confronted big challenges in our pre-pandemic lives, but this shared experience was uniquely difficult. One area of our lives that was dramatically altered was our collective perspective related to work. Working under the weight of chronic stress, financial insecurity, and collective grief forced people to work harder and longer to get to the same goals. We became exhausted, self-efficacy decreased, and cynicism grew. It’s no wonder that people eventually hit the wall. But it was still shocking when nearly half of the global workforce said, almost simultaneously, “I quit!”
As the World Shifts, So Should Leaders
Harvard Business Review | Nitin Nohria | July–August 2022

Research shows that different eras call for different approaches. More than 20 years ago my colleague Anthony Mayo and I launched the most ambitious research project I’ve ever undertaken. We started with a question: What are the defining characteristics of extraordinary business leaders? To answer it, we created a list of 1,000 outstanding 20th-century American business leaders and studied each in depth.
What we found surprised us: Great leaders were defined less by enduring traits and more by their ability to recognize and adapt to the opportunities created by a particular moment. They could sense the zeitgeist—the spirit, mood, ideas, and beliefs that define a period—and seize it.

IRS Raises Standard Mileage Rate Effective July 1
Bukaty Companies on July 6, 2022

With gas prices soaring, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) increased the standard mileage rate for business travel through the rest of 2022 to 62.5 cents per mile. This change became effective July 1, 2022.
The rate for medical or moving expenses for active-duty members of the military increased four cents to 22 cents per mile. The rate for charitable organizations stays constant at 14 cents per mile.
Standard mileage rates are optional, but taxpayers may use these figures to calculate deductible costs for automobiles operated for business and other certain purposes. The last time the IRS made a mid-year adjustment was 2011.
Can Differences in Communication Styles Among a Diverse Workforce Contribute to Discrimination Claims?
Husch Blackwell | Catarina Colón & Tracey O'Brien | July 19, 2022

In a world radically changed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the way we communicate in the workplace has been permanently altered with the integration of online communication platforms. Effective communication is essential to human functioning, including within the context of organizations and business entities. But the common workplace communication method changed swiftly when communication technologies replaced in-person communication that once typified office settings.
‘Accessibility Is a Journey’: A DEI Expert On Disability Rights
HR Dive | Caroline Colvin | June 22, 2022

Employers can wait for a worker to request reasonable accommodation under the ADA, but Kelly Hermann asks: Why not be accommodating from the start? As HR professionals dig into the accessibility aspect of DEI, potholes abound. “Accessibility is one of those terms that engenders a lot of anxiety for folks,” Kelly Hermann told HR Dive. “They’re like, ‘I don’t want to do it wrong. I don’t want to be seen as the person who is going to kick the person in the wheelchair or, you know, be discriminatory,’” she recalled.
Mental Health at Work Needs a Reboot
IPMR HR | Laura Putnam | June 2022

Three suicides during one week involving one U.S. Navy aircraft carrier. This was the shocking story for the crew of the USS George H.W. Bush making headlines in September 2019. Fast forward to April 2022, and the story eerily repeats, with three sailors assigned to the USS George Washington taking their own lives within the span of a single week. In both cases, the Navy had invested heavily in mental health services and suicide prevention. Yet, sailors continue to die by suicide. Why?
Worried About Layoffs? Here’s What HR Should (And Shouldn’t) Do
HR Executive | Tom Starner
June 27, 2022

The economy is cooling off. Inflation is at a 40-year high. And the Federal Reserve recently put in place the highest interest rate hike in nearly three decades. Add it up, and some analysts believe that the Great Resignation’s hiring binge could be transforming into corporate job-shedding in the near future. For instance, companies such as Compass, Redfin, Tesla and Warner Bros. Discovery have announced layoffs in recent weeks.
3 Considerations for Employers to Reinvent the Workplace
HR Executive | Tanya Little and Matthew Daniel | June 22, 2022

A recent commentary in Fortune declared the office obsolete, prompting much discussion and debate. However, it’s Vitality Group’s view that reports of the death of the office have been greatly exaggerated. That said, the workplaces that thrive, enhance employee health and wellbeing, and buzz with energy and creativity—now and in the future—will look nothing like the offices that many deserted in 2020. We’ve given the future workplace a great deal of consideration in our quest to make people healthier and enhance and protect their lives. Our recently published research in the MIT Sloan Management Review examines the importance of adapting remote work policies to address work/life situations for employees to increase wellbeing and productivity.

6 Strategies to Maximize Success with Your Growing Contingent Workforce
HR Executive | Bhushan Sethi | June 23, 2022

Company leaders have weathered unprecedented chaos over the last year, from the Great Resignation and a growing skills gap to inflation and rising interest rates. Consequently, more companies now consider the value of contingent workers—whether they be independent contractors, part of a staffing firm or a service provider with specific skills and expertise. However, if leaders don’t proceed thoughtfully with their approach, they may find they are exposing the business to unnecessary risk and damaging relationships with their current workforce.

Unfortunately, it is not that easy as there are many different types of background checks as well as different methods for obtaining the report for each type. In this article, we will dive in and learn not only different types of background checks but reasons that you would want these run on your applicants/employees.
