We’re almost there. Almost where? We’re almost to the finish line, the goal line, the end of the line. Break a leg. It’s time for the show to go on.
June 15th is right around the corner and it’s time to blow off the dust, wash the windows, give the dog a bath and open the doors. Are you ready? Let’s open up for business.
On May 21st we received the letter to all Californians from the California Department of Public Health and approved by our Governor and Dr. Tomas J. Aragon our State Public Health Officer & Director specifying what the reopening looks like at different levels. And guess what? It’s not at all clear, in fact it’s layered with colored charts, a plethora of restrictions and requirements plus a list of “key indicators” that determine reopening. If you haven’t read the full letter, take a look here: https://covid19.ca.gov/safer-economy/#reopening-safely
Now that you’ve got that all figured out move on to your next step in reopening fully. Hiring. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Just tell your laid off staff hey it’s time to come back to work and see the reply. Ok, so then maybe you just have to hire some new help. What do you mean there are no applicants? You posted the jobs you have to fill and there are many but, you don’t have any applicants? Did you ask anyone why they’re not coming back to work? What are you doing wrong?
Ask a group of employers what the problem is, and you’ll probably get the same reply we’re hearing here at the Chamber. Why should I come back to work when I can still receive my EDD money which is supplemented by more government money? It’s a problem people, a big problem.
Last Thursday the Chamber held the first of a series of multiple Job Fairs here in the Chamber’s parking lot. We had a great turnout of businesses from not just Escondido but all over San Diego here with representatives ready to answer questions and hire people right now. We had a good showing of job seekers, and many came prepared with their best dress, smile, warm handshake (supplanted with fist bumps) and resumes. But it’s not enough. There are literally thousands of jobs to be filled to meet the demand.
So, we’re going to do another job fair this month and next month and the next month and the next month...you see where I’m going. We’re not going to stop until we run out of jobs to fill. For more information, please go to the Chamber’s website.
On another note, the word is out, and it is official Cruisin' Grand is returning to downtown Escondido beginning Friday, June 18th! Get ready to get outside and enjoy downtown while the cars add a backdrop to all the people on parade.
Speaking of cars, the results are in from last week’s poll question...did you vote?
Cheers,
James Rowten (JR)
