Esperanza Health Center Receives $464,000 in Federal Funding from Senator Bob Casey

On Monday August 19, Esperanza Health Center hosted a press conference for Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) at the community welness center The CORE in which he announced the $464,000 in federal funding that he secured for the expansion of our Fifth Street site.

This funding will provide an expanded waiting room, new patient rooms, a new group room, and an elevator in efforts to expand community healthcare and outreach, reaching an additional 50-60% more patients. The project is expected to be completed by Summer 2025.

The expansion of our Fifth Street site will play a crucial role in addressing Philadelphia's ongoing opioid crisis. With additional space to serve patients, Esperanza will expand access to medication-assisted treatment services, to support patients impacted by opioid-use disorder in their recovery. During a November 2023 press conference at The Core, Senator Casey highlighted the opioid crisis in Kensington.

More about the project can be found in this article by Kiara Santos for The Philadelphia Tribune, and this article by Impacto.

Summer Teen Internship Recap

This summer from July 15th to August 2nd, a group of 13 teens gathered at Esperanza Health Center’s community center, The CORE, for the Summer Teen Internship Program (STIP), a 3 week experience for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors to receive hands-on knowledge and experience about careers in the medical field.

Said participant Tahniyah Glen-McBride, “This program allowed me to explore various medical fields, understand what everyday life looks like for healthcare professionals. I had the chance to shadow a doctor who was treating a patient with a sexually transmitted disease. I was able to observe this condition and treatment up close. STIP provided an excellent opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the medical profession. I am grateful to be part of this program, as it has greatly enhanced my knowledge and provided valuable in-person experiences."

We are grateful to the PNC Foundation for their generous grant funding that made our STIP program possible this year!

Community Paint Day

On Saturday August 24, Esperanza Health Center staff and members of the community came out to begin painting the mural on the Kensington & Allegheny site garage. This mural, designed by artist Arshayla Robinson, will serve as a symbol of hope and positivity in the Kensington community and is expected to be completed by the end of September 2024. A special thanks to the Color Me Back Program of Mural Arts Philadelphia and Klean Kensington for the provided art supplies; thanks also to the many volunteers for your great energy!
