Ardmore Institute of Health Awards $103,000 to Expand our

Lifestyle Medicine Program

We’re excited to announce that we recently received a grant award of $103,000 from the Ardmore Institute of Health (AIH) to support expansion of our Lifestyle Medicine program for our patients and community members! In our current Lifestyle Medicine program, cohorts of between 10-12 participants meet for 10 weeks, in groups that are designed to help them achieve lifestyle changes in diet, nutrition and exercise. The gatherings focus on key areas including: nutrition education through the AIH’s Full Plate Living curriculum; interactive preparation of patient-inspired, culturally-relevant dishes with plant-predominant ingredients; behavioral health education; and guided group physical movement.

Through this new grant award, in addition to continued cohorts based on the Full Plate Living curriculum, we will add cohorts with two new focus areas: one on nutrition, sleep, stress, and spirituality, and another for those looking to the possibility of putting diabetes in remission. Also, we will introduce new cohorts opening this program to members of our community who are not Esperanza Health Center patients. We are grateful to the Ardmore Institute of Health for this generous funding that will enable us to significantly expand the scope of our Lifestyle Medicine program and provide access to more individuals in our community!

Esperanza Partners with the

Philly Unwrapped Coalition

We’re excited to share that we have a new community partner! The Philly Unwrapped Coalition has developed a free toolkit and six-session community series supporting Philadelphia-area businesses in reducing single-use packaging, cutting operating costs, and overall strengthening public health and environmental justice outcomes, which aligns with our mission to promote health in our communities.  What better way to kick-off off this partnership, than hosting their launch?

Join the Sustainable Business Network, ECHO Systems, Rethink Disposable/Clean Water Fund, and Trash Academy on Tuesday, February 10 from 5-7 PM at The CORE at Esperanza (3222 H Street) for the Philly Unwrapped Community Waste Reduction Toolkit Launch. This free, in-person event is designed for food, beverage, hospitality, and event-sector businesses and the organizations that support them to explore practical, cost-saving strategies to reduce waste. Attendees will learn how local businesses are saving thousands annually, connect with peers and advocates, and take part in a community listening session led by Trash Academy. Food and beverages will be served; the venue is ADA-accessible with interpretation available. This is a free event and registration is required.

Congressman Brendan Boyle Visits The CORE at Esperanza Health Center

On Tuesday, January 20th, Congressman Brendan Boyle (PA-02), who represents nearly all of Esperanza Health Center’s service area, held a press conference at The CORE in Kensington to highlight the harm caused by federal cuts to violence-prevention programs, housing funding, and health care access that disproportionately affect our communities, including Kensington. In the group photo from L to R are:

  • Philadelphia City Councilmember Quetcy Lozada
  • Donna Bullock, President and CEO of Project HOME
  • Congressman Brendan Boyle
  • Susan Post, CEO of EHC, and
  • Dr. Bill McKinney, Executive Director of New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC)
