Youth Programming on the Esplanade
MetroLacrosse at Children in the Park
Throughout the summer, the Esplanade Association (EA) offers opportunities for children with limited access to nature or green space to learn, explore, and play on the Esplanade.

So far, over 400 children have participated in EA's  Children in the Park Program. Over the course of six weeks, MetroLacrosse, Playworks, the Museum of Science, New England Aquarium, Zumix and the Boston Bruins will lead sessions for summer camps. All children enjoy healthy snacks donated by sweetgreen.

On the second of four Family Adventure Walks, Playing with Plants, families learned about the amazing tree species that help provide habitat for our Park's species and shade and beautiful foliage in summer and fall. The next Family Adventure Walk, Wildlife Watch, will be held on August 19th.

Summer Dock Party A Huge Success!
Party goers enjoyed beautiful views at the Dock Party
The 2017 Esplanade Summer Dock Party was an incredible night, filled with friends and neighbors, music and dancing, and plenty of food and beverages, all set against the beautiful backdrop of the sun setting over the Charles River. Over 240 people helped raise almost  $25,000 to benefit the Esplanade Association's work to revitalize, enhance and preserve the Charles River Esplanade for the enjoyment of everyone.
You can find photos of the evening on our Facebook page. Photos were also included in Boston Common Magazine and on

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us!

Horticulture Happenings
Fourth of July Clean-Up:
After hundreds of thousands of people took to the Esplanade for the Fourth of July, EA worked with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to repair damage caused to the Park. Our three full-time field staff picked up trash, pruned, cut damaged branches and replanted, returning the Esplanade to full splendor!

Seasonal Garden Maintenance:  As the weather has turned hotter, our hard-working Horticulture Crew has stopped planting in the Park for the season, and shifted focus to watering, maintaining (mulching and weeding) and applying compost to the  10  ornamental gardens under EA's care. Many of these gardens showcase the spectacular variety of native plants in the area, and we encourage you to explore them further.

High School Interns:  In partnership with the city of Boston and the Boston Private Industry Council, and with generous funding from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, the Esplanade Association has been able to hire three paid high school interns for the summer season. Please join us in welcoming Thierno Bah, Michael Nguyen and Camella Pershad to our team! They are gaining valuable hands-on experience in gardening, tree care, volunteer management, and more.

Volunteers in the Park
In July , 137 dedicated individuals volunteered in the Park, painting benches and removing invasive species. We sincerely thank the following companies for your time and financial support of the Esplanade Association:
Boston Cares Charles River Associates Eaton Vance Harvard Chan School Hearts on Fire, Jana, and   Reebok .
Volunteers with Reebok removed 440 yards of invasives from the Park

If you're interested in scheduling a volunteer event on the Esplanade, please email  Micah Jasny

In addition to coordinating volunteer groups, staff with our Stewardship Program have piloted an Invasive Phragmites Management Study. Thanks to the generous support of the John Merck Fund, EA has hired Solitude Lake Management and developed seven test sites. This critical research will allow us to determine which treatments are most effective in preventing the growth and spread of Phragmites (a highly invasive reed). Results of the testing can be applied throughout the Charles River Basin.
