Lotta Fountain Ribbon Cutting

A family affair: Sophia Panayotou cuts the ribbon on the Lotta Fountain. Her brother cut the ribbon on the Playspace, and her sister on the Hatch Shell Oval!
We did it! We are pleased to announce that water is once again flowing in the Lotta Fountain thanks to you, our supporters, and to our partners at the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.
This $358,000 project is a testament to our commitment to investing in capital improvements throughout the Park, as well as ongoing maintenance. Maintenance to the Lotta Fountain will be funded by the Esplanade Association for the next ten years.

First Family Adventure Powered by Reebok

Our first Family Adventure, Explore the Charles River, took place on Father's Day, June 18th. Forty people joined us to learn about the Charles River and the amazing species that live in it.

Our kayak tours, with support from Community Boating, allowed people to learn about the history of the Charles and see interesting sites along the Esplanade, while our fishing groups, with support from Charles River Outdoor Co., caught bluegills, pumpkinseeds, perch, and bass.
You can find photos from the day on our Facebook page. Stay tuned for more Family Adventures in July and August.

As you explore the Esplanade, we hope you'll take a moment to admire the work of our dedicated Horticulture staff. These past few months our three full-time staff in the Park have been busy:
  • Installing Adirondack Chairs on the Docks for the season
  • Enhancing and maintaining 10 ornamental gardens, adding an additional 720 perennials and 200 shrubs, the majority being native to New England!
  • Applying deep root fertilization with compost tea on newly planted and struggling trees
  • Spreading 180 yards of mulch in areas such as around the Charles River Bistro

Volunteers in the Park
Volunteers were hard at work on the Esplanade this spring, performing essential work such as bench painting, mulch spreading, and invasive species removal.

In May and June, 462 dedicated volunteers joined us in the Park. Thank you to the following companies for your time and financial support of the Esplanade Association:  Alkermes Alnylam Amico Boston Cares (our 2016 Volunteer Partner of the Year!),  Eaton Vance Grace Notes Novartis (100 volunteers!),  OSU Summer Break Service Takeda Thomson Reuters Tufts Health (75 volunteers!),  TUGG, and  Wellesley Bank.
