Ethnic Cleveland eNews
April 5, 2023
Better Late…
Thanks to those who e-mailed wondering where the Tuesday evening eNewsletter was. We were in crunch time putting the Cleveland International Hall of Fame program book together.

The good news is the book is on its way to the printers and it is SOLD OUT. Because of the terrific class of inductees, we maxed out the 60 page 8.5 x 11 full-color program book. It will definitely be a collector’s item.

As a reminder, The 2023 Class of the Cleveland International Hall of Fame consists of:
•    Pierre Bejjani – Lebanese/Middle East community inducted by Seven Hills Mayor Anthony Biasiotta.
•    Patricia Dowd – Irish community inducted by Gerry Quinn
•    Joyce Mariani – Italian community inducted by Basil Russo
•    Councilman Mike Polensek – Slovenian community – inducted by Joe Cimperman
•    Sudarshan Sathe – Indian community inducted by Baiju Shah
•    Mayor Georgine Welo – Serbian community inducted by Alex Machaskee

There are still a few tickets available to attend the induction on April 18 at Windows on the River. Check the website for individual tickets or reply back if you want to try and get a table still. (doubtful but we will try).
A very Holy Week
There are not a lot of ethnic activities this week because it is a very Holy Week.

Passover is one of the most widely observed Jewish holidays. It is an eight-day festival celebrated each spring that marks the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, as told in the Torah. In 2023, Passover starts at sundown Wednesday, Apr. 5 and ends Thursday, April 13.

For Muslims, Ramadan is still going on. It began Wednesday, March 22 and ends Thursday, April 20. It is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (sawm), prayer, reflection and community.

Hindus just celebrated Ram Navami, a festival that celebrates the birth of Rama. Our Indian Ambassador Deepa Rao said, “Travelling through the memory lane- Ramanavami day has a special remembrance in my mind. I used to wait for the Ram chariot to show up in front of our house. I used to sprinkle water and put in Rangoli. Pappa, Mamma used to do Rasana Juice to people coming along with the chariot. We used to do Beldehannina panaca and Kosambari that day.” She wishes “Happy and blessed Ram Navami to all”.
For the 2.5 billion or so Christians, this is Holy Week. It began on Sunday with Palm Sunday which commemorates Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Its name originates from the palm branches waved by the crowd to greet and honor Jesus as he entered the city.

Local churches had blessings of and processions with palms. Some, like Garfield Memorial Church, hosted a free community event which included live baby chicks, live baby lambs, face painting, games for kids, a free community meal and other activities. (photo above)

Holy Thursday (aka Maundy Thursday) commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles when he instituted the Holy Eucharist. Services include washing of the feet by the priest.

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary. It is the most solemn day of the year. You will see processions in many ethnic communities in Cleveland and all over the world where people carry a cross and process as Jesus did on his way to Calvary.
On Holy Saturday food is brought to Church and is blessed by the priests. Candlelight services bless the new oil and candles for the year, baptize new Christians and prepare for the joy of Easter morning.

Easter, or Resurrection Day, is the greatest Christian day of the year. It is the day that Jesus rose from the dead after being crucified thus showing God’s power even over death.

Each ethnicity and church will have special traditions that they follow in this holiest of weeks. It’s very interesting, and inspiring, to visit a different church than you are used to and take part.

I am going to try and join an Hispanic celebration. At 11 AM a Good Friday procession will depart from St. Michael the Archangel on Scranton in Cleveland with a stop at St. Colman for the Liturgy of the Word. The procession will continue to La Sagrada Familia for the Communion Service and Veneration of the Cross.
Two really good people

Eduardo Romero is a longtime friend and proud Peruvian American. Among other things he was the first president of ICC-WIN when we created it over 10 years ago.

He was recently promoted to Chief of HR for the City of Cleveland in a ceremony in the Rotunda of City Hall. It couldn’t happen to a nice or more qualified guy. (photo with the Mayor by Desmond Stanley)
A loyal reader let us know that her father, Maris Mantenieks, just passed away.  He was a longtime supporter of Latvia and the other Baltic nations and was honored by the president of Latvia for his efforts to get the Baltic States into NATO.

In 2015 Judge Ralph Perk Jr., Irene Morrow and Senator George Voinovich presented the American Nationalities Movement of Ohio Freedom Award to Latvian born Maris Mantenieks at the 54th annual Captive Nations Dinner in Cleveland. (video below) RIP Maris.
Sudarshan Sathe - Cleveland International Hall of Fame 2023 Class
The 2023 class of the Cleveland International Hall of Fame will be inducted in a dinner ceremony on Tuesday April 18 at Windows on the River. TV3 anchor Russ Mitchell will be the MC and Bishop Edward Malesic will give the invocation. Blaine Griffin, Chris Ronayne and Albert Ratner will give welcoming remarks. We have been featuring one of the six inductees each week in the eNews. Below is part of Sudarshan's bio.

Sudarshan ( su- dar- shun) Sathe ( Saa-the) earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, with first division honors, from the world famous IIT engineering school in India. He arrived in the U.S at a young age of 22 to join University of Akron’s master’s in chemical engineering program.

At the same Alma mater, he earned an MBA in International Business. After doing a series of jobs in the chemical and metals industry, and upon acquiring U S Citizenship in 1990, Mr. Sathe founded a company called NewConcepts where he developed products and processes that he has earned patents for and are used in the Steel industry today.

He is a member of numerous professional and civic organizations and has supported many causes having to do with amelioration of hunger, and with education of the underprivileged children, especially girls’ education.

Sudarshan’s philanthropic activities extend to Ekal, the One Teacher Schools, Akshaya Patra the inexhaustible food bowl- lunch program in schools- 100,000 Meal goal of Richfield Mayor Mike Wheeler, to end world hunger and Medical Yatra, among others. He has been on the board of Project Love, Values-in-Action that aims to end bullying in schools.

He is currently the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Federation of India’s community associations, FICA, the pan-Indian American organization in Northeast Ohio.

To this day, he remains a keen student of India’s History and philosophy and applies the age-old philosophical principles in business practice. The simplest of them being,” What you do with what you have, will determine what will materialize in your life”. He also follows not just the golden rule but the platinum rule, that says, Treat others as they wish to be treated.

He believes in the values of Indian culture and legacy that continue to enrich the world, be it Yoga, language, mathematics, or primacy of the mind. Because after all the battles and conquests, after all the technology and modern conveniences have been acquired, one last battle remains: and that is achieving a moment of pure inner peace.

Sudarshan is a Clevelander through and through where he lives with his wife Swati. They have two adult sons, Tejas and Ojas.

Sudarshan will be inducted by Baiju Shah
Blast from the Past - Fat Suit Sumo Wrestling

This always cracks me up. At the first Cleveland Asian Festival in 2010 attendees could put on cumbersome fat suits and sumo wrestle with others. Lots of funny falls.

Becoming Dr. Ruth
Dr. Ruth K. Westheimer changed the way we talk about sex and relationships with her hit '80s radio call-in show, Sexually Speaking. Now, she welcomes us into her home to share the unlikely path she took to becoming “Dr. Ruth.”
With her trademark wry humor, warmth, and candor, Becoming Dr. Ruth recounts her life’s many roles: a child escaping Nazi Germany on the Kindertransport; an Israeli sharpshooter in the 1940s; a single mother in America; and finally, the global celebrity sought out by presidents. This life-affirming solo show is a testament to resilience, forging your own path, and the joy of human connection. More info and tickets.
No, I did not seek the advice of Dr. Ruth!

I was at a Computer Convention in Las Vegas years ago and a vendor had a party at one of Vegas’ famous wedding chapels. Their celebrity guest was none other than Dr. Ruth.

The main thing I remember is how tiny she was – 4’ 7” tall. As you can see in the photo, I felt like a giant. Can you believe she was a sharpshooter fighting the Nazis?
Pundemics - Easter Edition
Where do Easter bunnies eat breakfast?
IHOP

Easter eggs hunts:
Proof your child can find things when they really want to.

After the egg hunt on Easter Sunday, the young farm boy decided to play a prank. He went to the chicken coop and replaced every single egg with a brightly colored one. A few minutes later the rooster walked in, saw all the colored eggs, then stormed outside and beat up the peacock!

I am putting an official ban on Easter puns, they're not bunny anymore! So here are two oldie but goodie pictures.
Postscript: The Cavs have been so much fun to watch and now the Guardians! We did a preview of what’s new at the ballpark (food, merchandise, services)for the 2023 season and posted here. Happy and Blessed Holy Week and Easter.
