What a week for the Dominican Community!
|
|
August 16 is a national holiday in the Dominican Republic. It is the day when Santiago Rodríguez and his men raised the new Dominican flag on the Capotillo hill which began the war which resulted in the restoration of Dominican sovereignty, the withdrawal of Spanish forces, the separation of the Captaincy General of Santo Domingo from Spain, and the establishment of a second republic in the Dominican Republic.
The Cleveland Dominican community held a celebration at Cleveland City Hall on August 18 and, for the first time ever, the flag of the Dominican Republic was raised.
Then on Saturday August 19 the community gathered to celebrate Dominican heritage and culture in the first Dominican Festival sponsored by Club Dominicano de Cleveland.

In this video interview below, Club Dominicano president Juan Carlos Medina told us about the group, Restoration Day and future plans for the Club.

The annual Romanian Festival in Cleveland on the grounds of Saint Mary Romanian Orthodox Cathedral is always a lot of fun. St. Mary's, founded in 1904, is the oldest Romanian Orthodox parish in the United States.
There was a variety of traditional food and drink. Of course the pastries were very popular. In the video below, one of the volunteer ladies showed us the different varieties including Savarine, Dobos, Bombe and a Romanian Salami which is actually a sweet.

Rotary International President-Elect in Cleveland

|
The Rotary Club of Cleveland welcomed Stephanie A. Urchick, Rotary International President-Elect to Cleveland. Among her activities was a meeting and presentation at the historic Union Club in Cleveland. Pictures and video
But before that we took her on a tour of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens. She is part Polish and Slovak so was not surprised that there are gardens for those heritages. But she is Carpatho-Rusyn on her Mom’s side so was happy to see the Rusyn Garden. Here she is pointing to where her family is from.

One World Day Cleanup
The Gardens were busy with the Stars of Summer event Saturday night (photos/video posted soon). They were also busy with many volunteers working in their gardens over the weekend sprucing up for One World Day. I saw Irish, Serbian, Hebrew (photo below), Czech, Croatian and many more gardens getting dolled up for the big day.

One special crew was at the new spot of the Filipino Garden, just north of the Hebrew Garden on East Blvd.

No Excuses!
If you’ve never been to a One World Day event, this is the year to go. Hopefully by now you know about all the great things happening there so let me address some of your concerns.
I don’t know how to get there or it’s too far!
If you can get on 90 (the Shoreway) you can get there and get there fast and easily.
I don’t know where to park!
There are free parking areas and signs and volunteers to get you from your car to the main area. This page has detailed directions to the Gardens and parking information.
I don’t have much money!
That’s OK. One World Day is free as is parking and the shuttle busses throughout the gardens. All the entertainment is free. Of course if you want to buy food or drinks or shop, you need some funds but everything else is free.
The weather will be bad!
Nope it’s supposed to be 74 degrees and sunny
I won’t know anyone!
You won’t find a friendlier group of people than One World Day volunteers and garden representatives.
I hate crowds!
Yes there will probably be about 30,000 people attending but that is throughout the day not all at once. And the Gardens are spaced out over 250 acres so you won’t feel crowded.
250 acres? I can’t walk that much!
You don’t have to. There are free busses and golf carts to take you around. You can also ride your bike and there will be hundreds of Lime scooters on site to use. And you don’t have to see everything.
I won’t feel safe!
The streets are closed to traffic. There are plenty of police and volunteers. There is professional first aid if you need it. Feel free to wear a mask. It’s a friendly, safe environment for the entire family. There have never been any incidents.
My kids will be bored!
Hardly. Besides all the regular entertainment and features, the Children’s Village has been expanded and there will be games, storytelling, interactive fun (playing Cleveland Orchestra instruments for example) and more. Plus they can get a free Passport and by visiting gardens and completing a task (learning to say “hello” in a language or finding a country on a map or…) they can get their passport stamped and turn it in for a prize.
I don’t have kids!
This is truly an all ages event with something for everyone. As an adult you can visit one of the 3 beer gardens (German, Irish and Serbian) to relax for a while.
Get the idea? So stop your whining and make plans to come down Sunday. See you there.

I still like the name of the local Plaid Sabbath better but these are great band names.

The Red Hot Chilli Pipers are a global phenomenon and their albums have been certified Gold and Triple Platinum.
The Tartan Terrors have a distinctive sound and carry with them the proud tradition of making Celtic music fun and accessible to all audiences. St. Columba Cathedral
159 W Rayen Ave, Youngstown
Polish Youngstown and St. Columba Cathedral are excited to honor the feast day of Eastern Europe's most beloved Marion icons with a special event on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 4 PM at St. Columba Cathedral 159 W Rayen Ave, Youngstown, OH 44503. Very Rev. Msgr. Robert J. Siffrin will serve as celebrant with other Diocesan Slavic priests invited. Traditional Polish hymns will be part of the English language mass. A Polish meal will be served in the Cathedral hall afterward. The public is invited.
The Reverend Eric Orzech, Past President and Board Member of the Polish-American Priests Association will be the keynote speaker. He will speak to the miracles associated with the ”Black Madonna” and her role in Catholic lives today.
The icon of Our Lady of Czêstochowa has been intimately associated with Poland for more than 600 years. In every Polish church, there is a reproduction of the Black Madonna. When Poles emigrated, they brought their devotion to the Mother of God, creating home altars and innumerable churches, chapels, and shrines in her honor. A special place is always reserved for her.

One World Day

11 AM - 6 PM
Cleveland Cultural Gardens
Since 1945 the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation (CCGF) has celebrated One World Day which exemplifies the theme of the Gardens: “Peace through Mutual Understanding.” Join us for the 77th annual One World Day which will be held on Sunday August 27, 2023 from 11 AM – 6PM throughout the Gardens on both East and MLK Boulevards.
Tens of thousands of people attend One World Day to experience diversity in people, heritages, gardens, entertainment and food. With the streets closed to traffic, visitors can stroll, bike, scoot or ride the free shuttles throughout the 250 acre footprint and visit many of the 40 or so Gardens.
Special attractions include a moving Naturalization Ceremony where people from a dozen or so countries become US citizens. A highlight is the Parade of Flags where over 1000 marchers from about 60 cultures march with flags and traditional clothing of their heritage. The Parade of Flags has grown into a large and colorful display of the numerous heritages represented in the Gardens and the broader Cleveland community. The MCs will be from all 4 TV stations.
There will be 3 Beer Gardens (German, Irish and Serbian gardens), a large variety of ethnic food, a Children's Village with games and activities and more. The Passport to Peace will encourage kids (of all ages) to visit as many gardens as they can, complete a task or learning experience, get their passport stamped and collect a prize.

Pundemics
My friend warned me about a new Amazon scam. It seems his wife ordered him some golf clubs but women’s shoes came instead. Thankfully they fit his wife.
Last year I joined a support group for antisocial people.
We haven’t met yet.
Always make sure that someone in a relationship has good credit. That’s why it’s called a SIGNIFICANT other.
Sign-if-I-can’t.
I wasn't originally going to get that brain transplant, but then I changed my mind.
What do you call an obese psychic?
A four-chin teller.
