FICA India Republic Day 2024
FICA is an organization dedicated to serving the needs of the Asian Indian Community in Northeast Ohio. They hosted a celebration of India's 75th Republic Day at Lotus Banquets with cultural performances, awards, dancing, music and food. One of the highlights was a Fashion Show featuring ladies in beautiful attire from some of the states of India.

As our Ambassador Deepa Rao said, “India is a country renowned for its diverse cultures, languages, and traditions, all of which are beautifully reflected in the traditional clothing worn by its people. Each state in India has its own distinct style of traditional dress, representing a unique expression of culture, history, and social customs. These traditional dresses not only showcase the rich heritage of the country but also instill a sense of pride and identity among its people.”

Arab Community Bazaar
Sometimes events are not very successful in their first year but the first Arab Community Bazaar held Sunday at the North Olmsted Community Cabin was a huge success. The room was packed with dozens of vendors and information resources.

Dr. Mohammad Alhawawsha, President of the Jordanian Community of Ohio, said the event aimed to support small businesses, especially those led by women working from home to support themselves.

Hundreds came through the Bazaar throughout the afternoon including the Mayor of North Olmsted Nicole Dailey Jones. (Mayor Jones and Dr. and Mrs. Alhawawsha in photo above)

Ukraine Vigils – 2 Years
Members of the Ukrainian community and supporters held vigils in Cleveland and throughout the world to show support for Ukraine against the aggressive invasion by Putin 2 years ago.

Local Ukrainian leaders Andy Fedynsky and Dr. George Jaskiw travelled to Washington DC to attend that vigil. George met up with his son Michael who's an attorney in DC.

Here is Andy Fedynsky and family members Michael, Alexa and Chris at the Washington DC rally.
Independence of the Dominican Republic
The Dominican War of Independence (Guerra de Independencia Dominicana) was a war of independence that began when the Dominican Republic declared independence from the Republic of Haiti on February 27, 1844 and ended on January 24, 1856.

Before the war, the island of Hispaniola had been united for 22 years when the newly independent nation, previously known as the Captaincy General of Santo Domingo, was unified with the Republic of Haiti in 1822.

Tonight, on February 27, 2024 the Terminal Tower will be lit up with the colors of the Dominican flag.

First African American in space
As we wrap up Black History Month this week here is something you may not be aware of. I wasn’t till I saw the display at the Great Lakes Science Center NASA Glenn Visitor Center this week.

Guion (Guy) Stewart Bluford Jr. is an American aerospace engineer, retired United States Air Force (USAF) officer and fighter pilot, and former NASA astronaut. In that capacity he became the first African American to go to space. While assigned to NASA, he remained a USAF officer rising to the rank of colonel. He participated in four Space Shuttle flights between 1983 and 1992. He logged over 688 hours in space.

In 1983, as a member of the crew of the Orbiter Challenger on the mission STS-8, he became the first African American in space as well as the second black person in space, after Cuban cosmonaut Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez.

Guy was born in Philadelphia but now he is one of Cleveland’s own and lives in Westlake! In 2020, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine awarded him the Ohio Distinguished Service Medal: Ohio's highest non-combat decoration for service.

This is their description of the show:

"A married couple that society marks as a role model. She is a television channel presenter, and he is a media lawyer. Both feed our daily terrorism with their prejudices and contempt. A daily terror, light, competitive and fashionable. On any given day, when everything seems normal, both are unaware that secrets are waiting to cause the unpredictable. A call from abroad will make the past become present, like a bomb, and nothing will be the same in your marriage. At the pure rhythm of comedy, a wild, crazy work without pauses to talk about our greatest terror, the meaning of identity, and the knowledge that we will never be able to know the person next to us. It's a dark, sexy comedy, only for adults. 16+, Content partial nudity, suggestive sexual content, hate speech, violence, and racism."

Pundemics
Do you remember the Brady Bunch TV show? Here’s a little known (joke) fact: Mike Brady bought their house with the money he made from inventing Zoom. Here’s a screenshot of their first meeting.
Don’t expect me to come up with Leap Year puns every 4 years! LOL. But here’s a few.

I’m taking February 29 off from work.
I don’t think my Microsoft Office 365 will work that day.

In what year were kangaroos discovered?
A leap year, of course.

Where do most people eat pancakes on leap day?
IHOP.

Ba da dum
Postscript: Hard to believe it will be March in a few days. Not to jinx it but this has been a very weather-friendly winter. Of course we’ve survived a lot of snowy St. Patrick’s Day parades so, fingers-crossed.
