Tour de France - Special Fun with Maps
I admit that I knew very little about the Tour de France outside of hearing names like Greg LeMond and Lance Armstrong and about the yellow jersey. But while flipping through TV channels I saw some of the race and became hooked.
In this special episode of Fun with Maps, I look at the map of the most famous bicycle race in the world, the Tour de France. The peloton is particularly intriguing with the large group of riders mere inches from each other and the individual and team strategies for drafting and more.
I also learned about the significance of not just the yellow jersey but the green, white and polka dot jerseys. The 2022 Tour de France (going on right now) began on July 1 with the Grand Départ in Denmark, the 10th country to host a start.
With about 5.8 million people in Denmark about 9 out of 10 Danes own a bicycle and there are about 12,000km of bike routes across the country. There are 673,000 bikes just in the capital city of Copenhagen which has been named the world’s best cycling city.
In this video I touch on the history of the race and some of the countries it has passed through. I am looking forward to the final stage in Paris on July 24 as the cyclists ride down the Champs-Élysées.

Carl Robson, MD - Cleveland International Hall of Fame
Each week we are briefly featuring one of the new inductees. Carl Robson was inducted by Aklilu Demessie.
Carl worked in the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood for 50 years in the practice of Family Medicine – mostly private practice. Carl says the practice was very rewarding and meaningful to the patients (and doctor), to have the same doctor for so many years.
Carl was recruited reluctantly on an Ethiopian tour in 1982 by his Mom and became fascinated with the country. This led to an abiding involvement ever since. Carl married Ethiopian R.N. Senait Shiferaw, who continuously does meaningful, targeted projects of need for Ethiopians.
Carl formed the non-profit Menelik Hall Foundation Inc. in 1987 for student assistance and Ethiopian projects in general. The Foundation held many cultural/historical programs over the years. Over 50 student and immigrant sponsorships, medical projects and book shipments. He helped establish and maintain an on-going sister-city connection with Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
Carl was instrumental in the establishment of the first Cleveland Cultural Garden of an African country. He helped with the construction of the Ethiopian Cultural Garden Mosaic Wall.
Many best know Dr. Robson as the owner of Empress Taytu Ethiopian Restaurant at 6125 St. Clair Ave. in Cleveland where he has worked to bring Ethiopian food and culture to the public.

Front Art International in Syrian Cultural Gardens
Sunday July 17
2 - 4 PM
Syrian Cultural Garden
MLK near Superior
Front Art International announced their Triennial Art Exhibition, which includes 70 invited national artists to exhibit their artwork throughout the Cleveland area for 3 months this summer. This will bring thousands of visitors to the city during that time. One of these artists is the renowned Syrian American Ms.Diana Al-Hadid, , who was raised in the Cleveland area. She resides in NY now.
Framed by a scaled replica of the Palmyra Arch of Triumph, the centerpiece of the Syrian garden is a fountain. Diana Al-Hadid, who was raised in Ohio and is a Kent State University graduate, has converted the fountain into a symbolic ancient water-clock whose design is based on several instructions left behind by the twelfth-century Islamic polymath Ismail Al-Jazari. His intricate devices, collected in The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices, are considered the first programmable analog computers; they not only told time but also traced astrological measurements. While Al-Hadid’s installation is not similarly functional, it makes use of the fountain’s water feature to support jasmine plants that spill from the basin of the structure.
The national flower of Syria, jasmine, with its wild entanglement of vines and heady flowers, echoes Al-Hadid’s intricate and unruly sculpture. Known for her lacy, gravity-defying work in welded metal, this contemporary take on a historical monument evokes new narratives and speaks to the growth and prosperity of immigrant communities.
Al-Hadid’s embedded relationship within a set of intersecting communities—Cleveland’s Syrian-American community and the region’s many artistic communities—allows her the unusual freedom to innovate from within, to reinvent tradition and project forward future legacies that are both challenging and promising at the same time. The event is free for all.
